Expand tutorial
DEV EDIT: We expanded tutorial. But if you feel it is not enough, please visit this topic: https://timberborn.featureupvote.com/suggestions/224186/further-expand-tutorial
The game is quite simple and easy to understand, but things such as the city center range drive me nuts, i was making paths and more paths and suddenly some buildings were "disconected" even tho they were visually connected with a path, but surprise, the town center "line" didn't reach.
An idea to improve this issue is to add tutorial to "expand" your range, such as trying to reach for metal pieces, which usually are out of range, forcing you to build a gate, a town center, and the "merchant" routes between districts, the one that sends items and the one that receives them.

Brandon HicksAgree - just bought the game and super excited to play. All my bevers dies of starvation by day 14 because 'farm' wasn't part of the tutorial and I ran out of starting resources. also tutorial needs to highlight where items are. Clicking through 20 menus trying to find 'gathering flag'.

Cat MergedIt would help for novice/beginner player to get a better idea of how the game works. For example, indicating where the player can find the lumberjack flag, how assigning beaver works, how priorities work. The player could opt-out of course, but I feel it would make the game much more approachable to more novice players who still want a challenge (don't get me wrong!) but don't want to spend 30-45 minutes to figure out where things are.

Zombie MergedThe game needs more tutorials or at least instructions or point to youtube videos.
There is no way (shown/told) how to have /make more beavers.
Read up on it... (shouldn't have to ) . lodges and downtime make babies... HA.. doesn't seem to work like that.
Either make it a time thing that every 5 min real time vs population = x amount of kids or let us have some insight into how or why or when they breed.
Either Clear the stumps or make them regrow. There is way to much micro management in the game and I still haven't even built a forester.. which brings me to another pet peeve so far.
Way to many things locked off behind grind walls too early on.
Planting trees for example.. So you cut down the trees for logs, yet useless stumps remain and they don't regrow over time.
You made the game.. post a vid showing how to grow the colony
Thanks and good luck.. Not reviewing the game until it's ready -

JustAFriendlyDudeThe tutorial should explain the UI elements properly currently it has a lot of buttons and features which it doesn't touch. Like for example demolishing building isn't explained. And much more. The game should have a tutorial level where the UI is explained slowly and it shouldn't show stuff that useless for the player at that time (in the tutorial) after the player does some tasks it should reveal more mechanics and it should do that till the player has learned all the basics and is doing advanced stuff, after that the player should be left on his own to survive as the player should've learned everything by then and be able to manage the colony decently.

Jaclyn GillierJumped into the game and had no clue what I was to do. The prompts like build path are great goals but I don't know why I need to building them and found that I was struggling to find where these prompts can be found in the tool bar. By the time night fell in the game I still had accomplished nothing, was frustrated and rage quit.

PaulHave only played for 15 mins but a number of those minutes were spent trying to figure out what the Lumberjack flag is and where to find it. After that, it was unclear that to connect it to the district centre it must be contiguous with a path connected to the _door_ of the centre. The tutorial would benefit greatly from highlighting key parts of the UI, explanations describing why each tutorial step is needed (e.g. what does a "flag" do?), and clearly pointing out any nuances the player should know about (e.g. the path has to eventually connect to the door of a district centre, not just the building itself).

Dan Wilson MergedThis game is great, but it needs a better tutorial. Its very vague on HOW to do things. You're saying WHAT to do, but now HOW.
I currently have my starting population just walking around and looking at the orders and buildings i've given. -
18 Sep, '21
Jason BergmanAgree with all of this, it was really painful to and a lot of failed games to get the information that should have been shown to us rather than text that reads "build a lumberjack flag" do what every other game does and pause the game highlight where to click to find the lumberjack flag explain why we need this flag etc. But definitely walk people through how to get more babies and what will help do that faster.
Also I have died in so many games because lack of resources, I didn't build a dam to more resources, how to stack houses and properly build stairs etc. I have only learned by restarting my game over and over, and I really feel like this is one of those games that you don't want to be doing that. -

DuckI had the same issue.
I was able to figure out that I needed a new district, but then when it came to setting up this new district I was completely at a loss. I didn't know what buildings were necessary and it took me quite some time to figure out that the district center jobs were builders. For some reason I hadn't figured that out from the first tutorial, so I only sent one beaver and was confused when he didn't start scavenging.
I think a second optional tutorial should pop up when you place your second district. -

Michelle HawardA tutorial that shows you where the different elements are or at least tells you under what menu they fall under.
Brief explanations for beginners for:
*population
*science
*assigning construction/worker priorities
*highlighting that different materials are needed for construction and are provided by different buildings and how to unlock (probably falls under science)
*explaining how to link things with power - when do you need to link, when do you not?
Game is great fun, and I love citybuilders so managed to intuit a bunch of it, but a more in depth tutorial for beginners would be good. -

salFactorio-style tutorial scenarios, where its broken up into a few different maps with increasingly complex goals, would go a long way towards helping players understand the mechanics. Something like:
Map 1: Basic survival (building on what exists now, including farms, construction priorities, and population mechanics)
Map 2: Basic water mechanics & intro to dams (dams, levees, floodgates. also the fact that beavers can swim!)
Map 3: Power (power wheels, water wheels, windmills, and related buildings)
Map 4: Science (inventors & technologies, particularly focused on foresters, as they are the only long term source of wood)
Map 5: Districts (build range, creating new districts, distribution centers & dropoffs)
A player who can grasp these mechanics would have a very solid foundation to survive at least a few cycles on normal difficulty without having to restart for hours as they learn new mechanics (10 hours, for me) -

RichEasy quality if life change, don’t allow me to build paths if it’s out if range of my builders/center.
Allow stairs to stack on, or replace paths
I think this comes from being a bit of a preplanner.
What would also be cool is to allow for a “renovation.” Currently the business I work for is redoing our main campus. How cool would it be for you to upgrade say ‘Large Warehouse’ to ‘Underground Storage’ you’d save resources (maybe like 30%) but would come at the cost of needing to destroy surrounding buildings, disable its use etc.
So if you plan ahead you won’t fill up a warehouse with bread, build buildings touching each other. It gives something to repeating a map “what if I would have planned for that small warehouse to be upgraded to underground storage when I had the science available” -

TiryMaybe this "tutotial improvment" could be smartly merged with the "campaign mode" or "story telling" suggested in other posts. Indeed there could be wonderful stories or game goals about beavers, the way they have to survive, be happy, expand, conquer new districts, climb mountains, build over water, irrigate, use waterways....
It would be a great way to learn how to use waterways, transportation facilities, districts, power management.... -
23 Sep, '21
ZaryloI think the tutorial is fine as it is.
Here is what I love about it:
1. You can ignore it completely.
2. It does not block your personal progress. You are not prevented from building advanced stuff without having finished it. Great!
3. It gives basic hints about what you probably want to do and then leaves you to explore the game on your own with nothing but a "good luck!". Perfect!
Nowadays overbearing tuotorials to complex games are the number one turnoff.
The player has to learn this things on his own without being forced into it.
A tutorial isn't supposed to make sure the player survives his first drought,
Allow the player to not know anything, and if he is confused give him an option to voluntarily read on it in a ingame wiki style help section.
Some UI elements could be improved but, this isn't because of a lack of tutorial. -

Ness Morris MergedThe tutorial should suggest the importance of planting a lot of food and having a lot of water storage. On normal difficulty, the first drought will likely kill the beaver in charge of the water pump, and with no obvious way to reassign beavers already assigned to other jobs, beavers will continue to die of thirst even when the drought ends.
The unforgiving difficulty is at odds with the cute aesthetic of the game and is extremely frustrating. Players shouldn't have to start over multiple times in order to learn basic gameplay mechanics necessary for a functioning village. -

KitsunePls, add a better tutorial: about basic mechanics: f.e. like in Pharaoh first map/mission is like a tutorial: what residents need, maybe further buildings are unavailable at first steps to show what player should build at first; more useful descriptions for buildings (where it should be built and what materials are needed). F.e. I didn't understand right away, where I should build a double lodge. For now I also don't understand how district exchange works. Seems that devs and QA are great, but too many questions for GD... sorry, but for new players, it's a bad work

FirguenQA MergedI think the tutorial should be improved to help new players get feelings of success earlier and to lessen confusion. Crucial things to add to the tutorial would be time management, just to show where to pause and the game and remind the player that pausing while thinking/reading the building is encouraged. On my first play with the tutorial my beavers died of thirst, because it took me a while to figure out how to cut trees and how the log posts work.
Another thing is to add the farming step in the tutorial. I had collected all my berries at the point where i had finished watering and housing and build a power source for plank production. So my beavers started dying of hunger too at that point.
At this point (day 13 in game) i wanted to just start the game over. After these failures i would know better time management and how to handle all these situations. -
26 Sep, '21
Ky MergedI am glad I had friends to help me because the tutorial was completely unhelpful. It should really go a bit longer and have you make an inventor's hut, a water wheel, a farm, and a forester. You could definitely give a little time in between some of those still.
It would also help GREATLY to show where the things are in the menu you are looking for. It took me a couple in-game days to find where to put down the flags for lumber gatherers. -

Firehawk242Explaining how dams work is an absolute must. I flailed around for a bit because I didn't realize just how powerful even single level dams were at first, instead trying to rush irrigation to buy time for me to get a four level dam working, only to find out the bigger dam wasn't even necessary in the first place. (Well, kinda, I did end up needing the bigger dam for later, longer droughts, but that's not the point.)

Johnny MergedIt seems the game needs to be more intuitive. Ive played hundreds of video games, both computer and console based. It shouldnt be this difficult for me to learn how to play the game. The tutorial tells you what to do, but not how to do it.
I feel like i wasted my money buying what i hoped would be a fun game, but instead was frustrating and puzzling. -

Sean E RapinTutorial should take you all the way through the first drought, maybe even past it. Struggled through trial and error after losing all the beavers in my first game. Also think it should include district expansion as the first time I tried to do that I completely wiped out my colony.

Jordan MergedYour game is currently booming with people who are obsessed with this genre.
For someone who isn't a big fan of the genre but thought your concept was great, LEAVING THE UI TO BE EXPLORED WITHOUT DIRECTION IS A TERRIBLE WAY TO GET PEOPLE INVESTED.
Why should anyone have to check FOURTEEN ICONS in order to find where the lumberjack flag is?
Why on earth do you have destroy building icon before any of the actual building icons?
Why aren't building icons clearly distinguished and easily categorised?
WHY ISN'T THERE A GENERAL BUILDING ICON?
Why are you committed to one direction when placing paths?
I have played a mere 1 hour of the game so far, and the promise is all there to see, it's just really fucking annoying to try and see how good it is. -

Aisha B Cozad MergedFirst, the game is really fun, and of course, the beavers are adorable. However, I'm now finding myself having established a pretty stable district, but not really sure how to get water to the interior sections of the land mass. Either you just haven't played any colony builder games, or I just don't believe you. Aside of a few details game works with "classic" mechanics like dozens of similar games. -

Thomas MergedBasic tutorial or opt-in tooltips to give a bit more of a heads up on what to do or the basic systems at play in the game. Figuring it out is fun but opening it and going 'oh... what now' is a bit weird. Would prefer a little more advice to help me figure it out on my own without having to go onto youtube and look up a guide or something. Otherwise good stuff :3

AckwardNinja MergedMy first time playing I got stuck with very little wood because I didn't realise I needed to rush to get the forester unlocked in order to get more wood. Was super slow expanding after 2 cyles and a some time googling to find I needed a forester ASAP. Probably would be best to start it unlocked or teach people to research things in the quick how-to of the game

PhanTomFoolery MergedI think there needs to be a lot more detail put into the tutorial- things like how beavers reproduce, why/how to build dams, everything. The details are so sparse that the first stage (build some forester flags) DOESNT TELL YOU HOW TO BUILD FORESTER FLAGS. Please improve.

chance Mergedfor the tutorial at the start of the game, maybe have a button that jumps to where things are eg where lumber flags are

Stormy Sto HelitYes please, please, please.
I'm loving this game, but I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark - I'm discovering things by accident, trying workarounds that surely aren't the best way to do things, and feeling like I'm not getting the best experience that the game can offer. -

Laura MergedAfter the brief tutorial, I was left a bit bewildered by such a large amount of options. My beavers died very quickly because although I had made fields, I had no farmhouse. This may not be a problem for folks who play a lot of these sort of games, but for people who are new to the genre (cuteness on this level attracts a lot more casual gamers), a bit more of a push would be appreciated. Even something small like, "Most of the resources in the game require more than one building to be gathered. Be aware of supply chains and specialization!" would help immensely in letting us know what we need to keep our poor beavers alive.

Aude Lété MergedThe tutorial gives the very basics and doesn't show where the player needs to click so it is a LOT of time spent searching for the key words given in the "tutorial". Also, not everyone being expert in construction games, it would be nice if there was a little something about how the beavers work, what can be done with them... In essence, please be more explicit and explanatory =)
I discovered this game thanks to Kripparian on twitch and straight away thought I'd give it a go, which I did, but it isn't very clear and it makes things unnecessarily difficult, something I did not think would happen. I'm very happy though, and I'm going to keep on playing because I love the idea of beavers creating their own civilisation (that's just awesome! thanks a lot for that!!), keep up the great work guys! -

A Z-GDiscovered this game after watching Ray__C's sponsored stream. Understand that you want us to 'learn for ourselves', but aspects like "how to build a dam" and "why you want to scrap metal" aren't covered off in the basic tutorial. Would also like to see an option to be able to skip parts of a tutorial as well.

ZoLatKamSuggestion: The tutorial for planting carrots could be a more clear that one needs to plant "60 individual plots", rather than planting "60 carrots".
Reason: In my first ever game, I figured I could plant 30 plots, wait for them to be harvested and then the next 30 would fulfill the requirement. This was not the case and since the tutorial will not progress to the next part until the current part has been completed, everyone died of starvation.
Notes: The game is definitely very interesting and I will not make the above mistake again.
Imho, adding a space and 4 letters, making the tutorial read "plant 60 carrot plots" instead of "plant 60 carrots", will increase clarity and reduce the potential for other new players to make this same mistake. :) -

terryclothI don't know if it's random or what but immediately after the tutorial was a dry season that the tutorial ensured none of my beavers would survive because it only had me build two water barrels and nothing resembling a dam.

JessiI wish there was a short explanation on everything to do with water. How to maintain some water during droughts, how to make more land fertile etc.
I actually only played the tutorial to learn how the vertical building and water stuff works (I like figuring out the other stuff myself. Usually not that difficult if you play a lot of city builders). Sadly, none of them were explained. I figured out the building after a few failed attempts, but didn't understand the water stuff completely yet, after watching some videos that gave some vague hints, plus some trial & error. -

AviDoing the tutorial on 'normal' mode didn't even get me through the 1st cycle. There is some unbalanced thing going on there.

mjevansThe 2021-October tutorial barely gets a player through the first drought (normal, recommended map, initial beaver class).
The Factorio Tutorial / Demo suggestion above is a good idea too.
To really improve the tutorial would take a few additional changes in the game; that just about everyone wants anyway.
* Configure buildings _before_ built as well. So that they can be placed and setup and then the player can move on to the next thing.
* (Optional, but strongly desired / recommended by me) A jobs priority system so that placement groups can be (planned) managed instead of micro-managed.
The tutorial could explain tools for construction priority and while items are being built roll-up the task into a progress bar.
It could then let the player move on to the next task while, E.G. 60+ carrot crops get planted or a building built to do that.
A research hut could be queued to be built, and the sawmill and water wheel put into the list easily in advance while the lodges are built. -

Kaminskii_RUHey there! I am Russian, so down there can be mistakes. If some1 have a need, find me in Steam, friend code 95731261. Let's rock.
2 days ago have played on the Canyon map, easy difficulty. Reached 250+ beavers, got every monument, built all the three twice, 12 or 13 lvl of happiness.
At my opinion, player should have a example of "this thing works like this". I figured out the point of the dam through "let's play" on YouTube. Day before, city suffered 70% loss of population on "normal" at the 2nd drought. I just got out of the water. I thought, I need to migrate to the next point of map, where the drought can't dry out the water. Then I got confused at the district mechanics (rss transfer) and closed the game. Now I know, that migration isn't the answer cuz 12+ days drought can kill any water spot.
I think, short (1-3 min long) clips should solve the problem. Use subtitles or speech and explain.
Thank you for the Game! Challenge even at easy -

Kaminskii_RUAlso, I want the dev group to explain the work of 4 beavers, which working at District center (DC next). I can add
-the builder's building, where the beavers can help building processes;
-the loader's (or hauler's or carrier's), who has +100% bonus to the weight of the carried staff;
-the carriers between the DC.
If beaver is working at DC, he can build, carry, carry and build.
But, sometimes I saw that if beaver is working as the lumberjack, he also help others to carry smth, if there is no tree to cut. So, I got a question of the priorities of employed beavers. Unemployed beavers do nothing or go resting.
And, I think, there should be information about "1 tile of water dries out at X day(s). If it is 2 tiles depth, it dries out at X days. If there are 2 tiles of water (left and right), it dries out slower, and it takes X days".
Again, 10q for the Game. Today or tomorrow gonna try the Iron Teeth -

MonksAfter 2 hours, I'm still completely confused how dams work and what to do next. The goals are too vague and the tutorial stops before it gets into any of the systems.
