Improve handling of save game files (Name Town)
[mod edit]: There was a number of suggestion regarding saving games, they may have a different ideas of patterns to be used, but I believe they addressing same issue. So all non-specific ideas now will be merged here.
Other suggestion features:
- overwrite saves
- include savegame screencap
- let choose a folder
- delete multiple saves at once
- beaver count in save info
Allow us to name the town/save and use that to name the saves even in autosave or place all saves for that town/save into a folder with that name.
[mod edit]: This topic is closed after patch on 20.11.2021, please see https://timberborn.featureupvote.com/suggestions/259285/further-improve-saving-allow-overwriting-more-info-and-others

mitchell MergedYou can't really see other saved games when you save right now. You probably should be able to override other saved games as to not make a bunch of superfluous saves in game.

Stephen MergedControl + A (windows hot key for highlight all) does not work when trying to save the game. (Example: games with two different factions or two different maps and wanted to keep them separate)
Additionally, if a custom save name has been used it would be nice if the next time you tried to save the game it used your custom name instead of the current naming convention.
The game is really fun :) -

kaeptnjoker MergedSaving a game is super fast, which is great, but also leaves me wondering if the button actually did anything. So some kind of confirmation message would remove this concern.

Adam MergedSo, save files seem to be just JSON text files. I'm on cycle 10, and each save is already 5MB; the whole folder is ~300MB, after about 10 hours of game time. Looking at the files though, there's lots of scope for compression. I just tested compressing a 5MB save file to .zip (using the built in windows right click 'send to zipfile' option), and it compressed down to ~600kb.
It might be worth considering compressing them, possibly with some rotation or something so the first X many are the raw file, and the rest are compressed up or something. -

Nash MergedIt doesn't prompt overwrite it would be nice to see all of the save files when you save.

Fidget MergedCurrently the game will just create an endless amount of autosaves. It's been a very long time since I've seen a game with this type of auto-save behaviour. I can see a use on the development side to be able to load back far into a playthrough for bug tracking, however now that the game is released in an early access state, hard drive flooding should not be a default behaviour.
Use a world/save name, "My World" for example, and have it just save "My World $TimeStamp" and prune oldest beyond 5 or 10 sequences of autosaves. The name could simply be based on a user defined name for their tribe, or the name they want to call their world, or just generically whatever they wanna call the game save. Doing it in this manner can allow a more functional and robust save/load system, similar in many other games where you can select the save, and then select from autosaves, or individual saves under that session. You would have Timberborn\Saves\My World\ and then all the saves related to that. -

DJWolf-3 MergedHello and I think this is the first suggestion for this and I would love to see an organized save directory down the line where when you play a new game the map you choose creates a folder named of that map and any autosaves or saved games that were created while playing onto that map it will create them into the folder named after the map currently played such as...
1) New Game
2) Select Factiopn & Map
3) When Game is Created it makes a Folder Based on the Faction & Map - Could choose a name too for the game for organization
4) when an autosave or save occurs itll create them into a folder named after the faction/map or what you have named it
Naming Convention: Faction - Map - Cycle - Day - Hour - Min
Example: Folktales - Mountains - C1 - D2 - 5Hr- 10Min
I think it would be a good idea especially if people want to take a break from beavering on certain maps for a little bit or are Entertainers and have to leave the map alone for a while such as Twitch Streamers and Youtu -

Porisius MergedSimple idea of colony group saves for when you are running one colony/map for like a Twitch playthrough, and the other for a YouTube playthrough.
Or if you wanted a chill easy play vs anytime you work on that really challenging colony... maybe have a "test" save group to test changes in the game and ideas...
Oxygen Not Included does this very well to help people pick between colonies, if that helps any. -

GH MergedRequiring the player to give your game access to restricted folders is bad. Without access I've seen your game fail to launch and saved games silently fail to save. You should let the play pick a folder location for the save games.

Whatsu MergedThere is a lot of things that can be improved about saving.
I really don't like that my save files are in my documents, so setting where you want to save the files would be really nice.
I'd like to see the date that save was created, what faction the save is about and what was the base map for that save without loading the game in loading/save menu.
There is quite a lot of autosaves and to add to Fidget's suggestion, there could be a option in settings about how many autosaves you want to keep. And if you saved before exiting autosave on exit is not needed.
Looking at the generated json, I just don't believe that precision of 10 decimals places is needed and rounding those to 3 or 4 decimal places would save a lot of space, and watermap outflows 0:0:0:0 could be changed to just 0 to save even more space, specially if the save file won't be compressed. -

-

Swanson MergedWhile saving the game, users should have access to all save games in the directory (not just the file name that can be changed shown, to allow for saving over previous saves and also to differentiate different saves - could be via save names or times, locations, or factions).

Drifius MergedHi, I was playing and I realized that when you hit the save button It just pops up a little screen where you write the save name and that's it. It would be nice that when you hit the save button it shows you a list of all the save files, you choose one and overwrite it, or maybe you can manage your saves, as delete, copy, choose another save directory, etc... P.S.: I love the game so far, keep up with the good work!

Rae MergedWhen I go to save I'd like to "overwrite" my named save.
When I exit I create a named save (not just the default naming convention). I love the autosaving, it's great for roll-back, but having a core-save would be lovely. -

Chris MergedHey, awesome game, I enjoy it a lot.
My problem is, that on Mac OS the safe files seem to be stored in the documents folder, which is by default tied to iCloud. As somebody who has no iCloud subscription the 5 free GB are super important for "real" documents and backups and stuff. The Timberborn safe files are pretty large and fill up my iCloud pretty quick (turned Auto-saving already off)
It would be super helpful if it would be possible to choose the folder where the safe files are stored, if its already possible my bad, it did not work somehow on my Mac.
Thanks for your time, keep doing awesome stuff <3

Chaos234 MergedI installed this game on my SSD which should definitly fast enough but it takes a few minutes to load a save which was a fresh started game.
I am not sure but are you using a cache or similar to store important stuff at game boot state and hold it ready while in main menu? Normaly such saves or fresh games are loaded in under one minute while installed on an SSD/NVMe.
So yeah, the game loading part should maybe re-worked or inspected with debuging tools to see what causes the load time in general and how could it be optimized ;) -

SoNick_RND MergedSaves need more info, like fraction.
My case is:
I played for first fraction, who is wood and stuff.
Then I unlocked second, iron fraction. Played some days.
And wanted go back to my first fraction game saved.
I opened "load" menu and found a lot of "autosave" points.
Well, maybe I can found it like difference between "day one" going after "day 10"
But it is NOT CONVENIENT.
Maybe you came up with some better saves management system. -

Whit MergedI found that when I save the game and an auto-save is later created, when I go back to save the game again, it reflects the name given by the auto-save. Moreover, there's no list of saved games available, so when I specify my own name again, I don't necessarily know if I've named it the same as before or not.

Alex D MergedAll the save files I actually do love it means you will never lose any progress it just gets too much and eventually will take up a lot of space and I would also like too maybe have multiple save files of the same world but I would also like to be able too pick and maybe override the previous one
For instance say I play a bit with both fractions i have too rename them so I remember which is which it gets a bit over whelming with all the date and types of saves.
But Thanks for this awesome game I am very well obsessed. -

Shoddyfrog*Attention Admin* Stop merging this request. Create a separate thread for it.
The ability to see a list of saves, and choose one to overwrite when saving. This feature is standard on all games except this one.
That feature has been asked for numerous times, but admin. just merges them all into this suggestion which is marked as "Done" As long as admin keep doing this, the feature will never get added. This feature is not "Done" it is not in the game. So admin please stop incorrectly merging the request into a suggestion marked as "Done" -
