Making Depth Markers (gauge) more useful: let us name Markers, and give them alert - alarm feature
So depth markers require some science investment and resources, but at the moment doesn't tell us much more than we can already guess by eye.
My proposed change is to firstly let us name depth markers; "main dam", "reservoir", "source" etc. and be able to cycle through them.
Secondly, add a feature to the Depth Marker that gives you a ping/alarm if it reaches above or below a certain depth; use the slider from the floodgates to change the trigger depth from 0 to 'never', and a check box or switch for 'above' or 'below'.
I think you can achieve most if not all this through existing game mechanics or re-using existing code from elsewhere in the game (floodgate has slider, check boxes and switches already exist in the UI, and you already have a notification system for pings and alarms).
Thanks for such a fun game so far, hope to see more from you all :)

PurserIf floodgate logic is implemented, depth markers could be used to help automate reservoir water storage. Currently each dry season I go through a routine of filling each of the areas I've made into either reservoirs or dams manually, but it's the same routine each time, so it would be possible to automate it with depth marker logic.

TiffanyI'd like a display that showed all depth marker's current depths at the same time. (With the ability to name them, of course). Right now I have to keep scrolling across the map and clicking each one repeatedly if I'm trying to monitor the effect of making changes to all my flood gates.

MaxiIt would be cool if there then was a screen with a list of all depth gauges and their corresponding values.
Clicking on a list entry would teleport the camera to the depth gauge. -

Bear MergedIt would be nice to have some sort of alarm if you are on the other side of the map and the water level went below a certain point (or just dry). You could have a beaver pull on a bird's tail to make it squawk?

JYI second Tiffany's and Maxi's suggestions of having some way to keep an eye on all depth markers' readouts, especially with some way to keep it displayed while doing something else (such as adjusting floodgates).

DavidGAs someone with ADHD I'm always getting distracted building something elsewhere and losing track of time during droughts and not opening gates when I need to. Having completely optional alarms on the depth markers would be help so much to remind me when I need release some water.

Keith Haynes MergedHave an alert similar to missing worker when a water measuring stick drops below a certain level.
Allow the user to set what that level is. Allow the user to cancel the alert too. -

Mark TaylorMerge this with the automatic floodgates thread (which itself needs to be merged into an 'advance water-management' thread), because those floodgates should respond to nearby markers (yes, I realize this would be akin to wireless technology, but you would be surprised the kinds of 'automated' things primitive cultures were able to come up with). All you'd need is some kind of floating thing attached to the water sensor, similar to how toilets work, etc. Anyhow, the floodgates would be 'hooked into' the nearest Depth marker, so the placement of these could be crucial if you have some very intricate water systems, as I build. And now I am thinking 'Blue Tooth' would definitely be something Beavers would have. LOL

Trevor Mergedwould be helpful for situational awareness to get an alert for low or high stream gauge readings, similar to "building lacks water" alert. Mostly useful thing would be to allow user to specify the alert levels per gauge but 80% solution would be to post low water level alert below 0.5 and high water level alert above 2.5 and force users to dig down or build up to adjust the gauge vertical position.

BratPfanneTV MergedSo as of now, there's the stream gauge in the game. I would suggest that maybe it could have the ability to send out an alert (maybe one of those messages in the bottom left, or maybe even something audible) when the water level it detects is below or above a certain configurable value. (whether it's below or above should of course also be configurable). This would help with detecing floods or lack of water in certain spaces and correcting it before all the plants die. If you consider this too overpowered for the stream gauge, it could also be made a new building which could require power or workers. I don't really mind either way, I just would like this feature to exist in any way. Thanks for reading!

StwfI like all of the suggestions in this thread: naming depth markers, ability to set alarms, a dashboard of all depth markers so,I can keep track of what’s going on, and controlling floodgates through depth marker readings.

A Belieber MergedIt would be awesome, if we could add an alarm message to mininum water level of a stream gauge. When the water level drops under a certain height, the messaging system warns the player by message and / or sound.

Svetlin Totev MergedAdd an option in a stream gauge's UI to set minimum and/or maximum water level, so if one of those limits is exceeded you would get one of those red warning boxes in the bottom left to tell you that a water level is too low or too high.
Currently you have to constantly scan around the map to check if any of your plants are no longer watered or drowning and about to die. Or if your water pumps aren't actually working (Which really needs to have its own warning as well). -

LW MergedIt would be great to have an upgraded Stream Gauge which allows you to set a value of water level or flow and gives a warning when the actual value falls below this. It would make floodgate management easier.

Vanessa MergedMy idea would be that the water level indicators can send a message when the water level falls above or below a certain level. Maybe first when there is no more water. It could be another additional better water level indicator for example.

WhiteRoo MergedAdd a small (1 by 1) building that has a setting, that will play a sound effect when the set condition is met.
Conditions:
-soil under it dried out
-not flooded
-soil under it is watered
-flooded
This would help manage bigger maps and far-away settlements. Maybe also consider different selectable alert sounds.
It either should employ a worker, or should generate a high priority task for a district center worker to sound the alert. Then the player can click on it to stop the alert until the condition changes back and forth again.
could be also used to warn about empty storage buildings maybe. -

Nicolas DUPRE+1 for ping alarm with names.
When I scheduling building, I forget the progression of the near nextg drougth period :)
And if you introduce automation, ping alarm can open/close start/stop building (mainly, water pump) -

aUnrealUncivilEngineer MergedA option to set a alert at a given water level or current flow rate for that mater (same type you get with a drought, one you will not miss in the corner) on a gauge would be very helpful, it would be nice to be working on a mega project and get a notice that my water is drying up and my crops are about to be out of water so i can open my flood gate and let some water out
In my current (and 1st) play though my lido lets me know it needs water, but i could use something harder to miss and this would make a stream gauge more useful, i missed it once and lost some under water plants -
