Otters
I know that the game is all about beavers, but maybe another water based animal could have survived and evolved. I'm talking about otters! They could be a faction. Maybe in the lore they are actually rivals of the beavers or something. Their thing would basically be that they eat fish instead of vegetables, introducing fishing to the game. Or if you don't like the idea of non-beaver factions, maybe they didn't evolve and instead are being kept by beavers as pets. That would still introduce the need for fishing and they could then produce something or satisfy a need. Maybe it is even a seperate faction of beaver to whom otters are exclusive. I just think it would be cool to have more animals than just beavers (and technically bees) in the game.

SombreWill be great to be able to play Otters as a Faction. With different way to play the game. Or having trading stuff with an ally Faction of Otters. So much possibilities.
The Redwall Series of book from Brian Jacques is full of ideas about Otters. -

YamabiibaaPlease also consider muskrats and nutria/coypu as possible candidates.

April MergedI mean, sea otters are basically beavers when you think about it enough. I would imagine they would be able to have pathways into waterways such as rivers and lakes without the need for a staircase to bring them down into water level. As well, I think sea otters are what people are thinking of when they think beavers eat fish.
This suggestion was also inspired by the episode of South Park, Go God Go Part 2, where there are 3 factions at war and 2 are human, the third is a sea otter faction. -

SamI think the otters should be an enemy faction who evolved into a different apocalyptic archetype: Nomadic Raiders. Called Marotters(like marauder), they should come down the water flow in the wet season, stealing supplies, causing minor amounts of havoc/damage before fleeing off the map, or maybe setting up small camps. I think this could add a completely different dynamic to the apocalyptic setting of the game. Also. Mad Max otters.

Tigerius_AltaicaIf you wanna add Otters, Nutrias and Muskrats, you should also consider Racoons. They already have hands ... with thumbs!

ErpPls at least use proper otters, Like smallclawed, or River, or Kongo, or short haired, and the barely present, mostly extinct, and barely able to survive without human Intervention sea otters. Smallclawed and Indian shorthair are even provably way more intelligent, use manufactured Tools, and are social creatures.
Further from a entrepreneurial perspective you should discard seaotters and Focus on either smallclawed or River, as seaotters are only popular in the usa, with Asia and Europe prefering the other species.
Seaotters are also very unlikely and even Not possible from an evolutionary perspective, as they evolved for a very specific niche on the sea(!) And are wholly unfit living on the earth, developing civ. or agriculture. They cant even Walk. River otters should be the Most likely choise, they share Environment with beavers, and managed to Prosper in each bare the Most arid Environments, you find them from siberia to the aquatorial jungels. -

Johno0108 MergedOtters that are from water biomes so the struggle when a drought hits would be very difficult. They have to collect debris in the water eg fallen trees, twigs or branches. Their main source of food would be fish that are found in deeper sections of the biome also maybe use cave systems that are not affected by droughts.

JustinI have been thinking about the Otter faction quite recently and with a "water-based" faction, I thought I would throw ideas out there.
I really do support the idea that the Otter be a water-based with most of their livelihood inside zones of water. It's been interesting thinking about having buildings in higher or lower depths of water and/or buildings that are between the two.
In terms of resources I was thinking this could lead to kelp, oyster, rock (Otters love rocks), and a few other resources they could gather. I know this would add a lot of complexity and time to add.
A possible change (since this may be a water-based faction) is having a "normal season", "dry season", and "wet season". Where the wet season would mean rain and increased flow.
I was thinking for Otters an interesting map would be a ocean-like map/ cove-like map. You could add tides to this map (or tie it to the season). This would mean they could go further out to scavenge.
Some food for thought. -

AndrewI think it is doable and might add to the game. There are some problems, though.
First, going full RTS would change the game too much. Additionally, even with the increased automation, it can be easy to forget open floodgates, turn off pumps etc when distracted. Large-scale warfare would take up too much attention.
Second, there are lore problems. The game is about preserving and creating life and is constructive rather than destructive. I love otters, but they are not builders or peaceful. Any role for otters should be subservient to the beaver ethos.
Otters would be dependent on beavers to create fish ponds. In return they could perform scouting and defensive tasks. Defend against what though? You might have destructive animals that damage the landscape and earthworks, perhaps even small beaver colonies. You could also have groups of otter raiders that steal fish and injure/kidnap beavers. Beavers could build defensive works and armour or comical weapons/traps for their otters. -
