Water Shed/Roofing to Reduce Evaporation, reservoir cover, shade balls
Suggestion for a late-game metal building/roof tile (similar in placement to the suspension bridge) which you can use to reduce or remove evaporation on that section of water. Would open up to large-scale canals and irrigation techniques for late-game food production. I'm in cycle 19 with nearly 400 beavers and I am finding it almost impossible to support for food with the amount of watered ground available. Dynamite helps a bit but splitting the lake slows water flow and ruins districts further down river (as they don't get water flow quickly for water wheels).

Vinny PAs another alternative; have a lumbertech equivalent of the 'shade balls' used to combat evaporation in IRL reservoirs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shade_balls
Have a 'shade ball dump' that people can place, and this spreads from water tile to water tile (and eventually decays?). -

A different Kevin MergedOne of the reasons given for dammed water still disappearing during the drought season is evaporation. I recommend adding a platform that is more expensive than the standard platform but has a solid top that reduces the rate of evaporation for any water stored beneath it. This could be combined with some other suggestions already listed as follows:
1
Water battery: Water pumped uphill then channeled past waterwheels on it's way back downhill is a good way to store extra energy produced during the wet times. However, much of this stored water is lost during the draught. These covers would extend the length of time that this stored water can be saved.
Aqueducts: One would that aqueducts should lose some of their retained water due to the same evaporation forces. Having these covers would increase the cost of the aqueduct, but reduce evaporation. Players can then decide whether to build cheaper with higher losses or more expensive with higher efficiency. -

Bimmy Beaver MergedI noticed that the water level is still slowly going down in areas where I am not pumping water and shouldnt do do since they are dammed up. Im not sure if thats because of nearby vegetation having an impact or if its some kind of effect of the dry season but it would be nifty if there was a way to stop it or slow it by reducing its exposure to the elements.

Waruiko MergedOne of the ways we reduce evaporation in real life is to put something between the water and the air both so light can't directly heat the water and so there is no place for the water to evaporate to.
I propose a one tile building made of either planks or logs combined with pine resin that places little shiny wooden balls that float in a tile and cut evaporation by 1/2. Maybe have a bad version that's just wood and prevents 1/4 1/3 and a better version that uses treated planks that does 2/3 or 3/4
Its something that logically works and fits with the games 'timberpunk' theme.
From a gameplay angle is both incisiveness players to work with the water mechanics and lets players on lower maps like the lake maps build up to having active reservoirs even on hard mode -

5th EarthAnother vote for shade balls or similar structure, maybe made from treated wood. One additional feature--you can't use them over aquatic farms, for obvious reasons.

william MergedAs the title says, it would be great to add water carpets that beavers can put on top of rivers. That way, water barely evaporates and you can enjoy from watered lands during dry season. This would give the possibility to implement if not already there, that water evaporates faster during dry season. That way using the combination with water carpets is a great game mechanic.
The recipe for producing water carpets would require for example treated paper which is paper + some resin (maybe some new kind of resin). The sheets can then be put on the water when required. The building itself that produces such carpets would require metal blocks and maybe dirt to make it more end game. Implementing this or something similar would be a very nice addition to the game. -

Alain MergedHi there! quick idea, could we make some tarp or cover that we could build over water in order to avoid/reduce evaporation? Maybe something that we can't build upon (to avoid it being overpowered). That could help for these hard mode games ;)

PikakeetYou wouldn’t even need a special item, just add a mechanic where if structures such as buildings or roofs are built above water those water tiles aren’t subject to evaporation or evaporate at a much slower rate.

Brendan MergedIn game during droughts your water evaporates or goes into the groundwater never to be seen again. This is remedied in real life by covering the reservoir with material and covering the ground with material. It would be interesting to see that implemented to keep your water stored during droughts effectively!

HCB MergedWith the recent changes to how irrigation work players need to manage larger water reservoirs. On hard this causes a lot of irrigation.
You might consider adding a mid- to late-game mechanic where shade can be provided, maybe platforms that don't provide support and use planks/paper, or a larger variant based off the metal platform. Make this reduce evaporation by 20-30-50% and there's another strategy/resource sync loop for players to explore. -

Drummin MergedTo combat the increased evaporation rate of water in irrigation canals, which I typically have a platform and road built in, have a special road type or seal that costs for example 1 unit of extract per-space to seal the road so there is no evaporation from this square. If this "seal" could also turn roads into barriers for Bad Tide intrusion that would be a nice added feature even if it costs a bit more.

Tom MergedIt should be possible to manage evaporation, either using the existing items that can be built over water, or using dedicated buildings. Platforms (particularly with buildings built on top of them) should reduce evaporation rates. A new "Evaporation Shade" building should be added that acts as a big sun shade (kinda like https://blindmagic.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Colesseum-BLind-Magic.jpg)
