Cut trees by default
Mark all land as tree cut allowed by default. Just like collecting berry bushes.

Vincent Agcaoili MergedHaving to mark down trees to be cut after laying out a Lumberjack Flag is really forgetful and feels like a glitch when trees are not being cut down.
-

Gin Fuyou Admin MergedI think it should be a warning when active lumberjack flag has no cut zones in range, vs just "nothing do" as it's now, since it's a bit different anyway

Gin Fuyou AdminBut cut trees don't regrow unlike collected berries

Quibue42 MergedFor me there are trees in range but they are just sitting at the flag and not cutting down the specific trees.

Austin Abrams MergedI often place lumberjack flags but forget to mark trees for deletion. After all, I don't have to mark berries for gathering or carrots for harvesting. Why should cutting down trees be any different? I could buy that someone would preserve trees for aesthetic purposes, but if that's true, then probably some people want to preserve berries and carrots too.
So my suggestion is to get rid of the tree cutting mask, let lumberjack beavers cut down trees by default, then add a general Preserve Resources tool that paints an area where trees won't be cut down, berries won't be harvested, etc. That way I won't forget to tag trees for the vast majority of the time when I need more logs, and people can keep their villages looking pretty if they want. -

Thaina Yu MergedI think this idea is really more logical UX wise

KnightForlorn Merged+1
This makes much more sense than declaring 'cut these trees'. I know in modern lumber industry it's a thing to mark trees for processing but I don't think that would be a thing for beavers. They should just cut everything in range unless told otherwise, hence Preserve Resource. Excellent suggestion. -

FuryoftheStars MergedPlacing the cutting (or preserving) mask in a checkered pattern is also good for keeping an ongoing (albeit slower) income of wood without the need of the forester. Just to throw that out there as another use of it.

Gin Fuyou Admin MergedKnightForlor, Thaina Yu I don't fully agree, problem with trees it's easy to cut down clear them in early game before making forester (planks require many logs for power). So I like chekered or grid marking pattern better, makes you think more about handling resources with care.

MaxAgree. If I place a lumberjack flag in range of some trees, they should cut them down unless I explicitly tell them not to. Otherwise I wouldn't put a lumberjack there. It should be a Preserve Forest tool, not a Cut Trees tool.
-

Thaina Yu Merged@gin I kind of agree on that. But to be fair it was totally a late game or hard mode advanced feature. So revert the mechanic for that advance player has this option but new player can just place a flag and start cut tree would be better IMHO

Stach MergedUsually you want to cut all of them, so it will easier to mark only those, you want to prevent from being cutted.

Gremlin MergedIn each batch, I immediately mark the entire clearing area. I need a lot of wood, it's easier to cut everything down and then plant maples.
This creates problems.
1) Sometimes I accidentally do not highlight a certain area. And I don't notice it. The lumberjack does not cut the grown maples, but I do not understand what the matter is: either there is no space in the warehouse, or the lumberjack is busy with another.
2) When allocating large areas, the game slows down. As I already wrote, I immediately select the entire map.
3) If I lower the soil level with dynamite, the area is no longer highlighted. I plant a tree there, but I forget to mark it.
Setting "allow all trees to be cut" would have solved the problem. -

Zanzo Mergedi can't count how many runs ended in 5 minutes because i forgot i had to mark every single tree to cut individually, unlike berry bushes.
i understand some people might want some trees for aesthetics, but wouldn't it make more sense to be able to mark trees to NOT be cut, rather than having to mark the entire map to cut trees? -

shkarlsson MergedIt seems more common to allow tree cutting (and foraging for that matter), rather than disallowing it. Therefore, the default should be allowed (cutting and foraging) while the tool can be used to save areas from cutting and foraging.

Xen MergedInstead of marking them for cutting make cutting trees default and mark them only to not cutting.
I understand not cutting trees important but I mostly want trees cut instead of not cutting them so default should be all trees are target for lumberjacks and you only mark trees you don't want to be cut. -

crimsonkingIn my opinion, you should either have to mark both trees and bushes, or none of them.
As it is, it's a very forgetful mechanics indeed. Even if a warning message pops up, you could always overlook it and later realize your mistake the hard way.
I understand it's because the bushes regrow while the trees don't, but it's still misleading, especially for new players. It personally took me quite a while to understand the trees don't regrow. After all, small trees from the beginning grow into big trees, you see the tree stomp is still there after the cut, so you assume it would eventually re-initiate the process. That until you get to understand how foresters work, but that takes some gameplay to do. -

crimsonkingPersonally, I like the option to pin-point what to cut and what to leave, especially if I need to make place for roads or buildings (it's better to cut down the tree and take the wood, than demolish it). Conversely, for the bushes I normally wait until berries are recollected, then I demolish the bush; the problem is: this takes forever more often than not. Quite tedious.
So, I'd just mark everything (trees and bushes). -

MELISSA MergedTurn on all trees for chopping by default and have a button for deselecting trees in case you do not want thrum cut. down. Never fail, I forget to select the trees and my beavers are idle.
Love the game. I've played over 100 so far! Keep up the great work! -

CamasiaWith the new update that adds chestnuts, pine resin, and maple syrup. Manually marking it makes more sense, since the tap, resin, and nuts do regenerate like berries, it would be unfortunate for your resin production, maple taps, or chestnut farm to get cut down from a poorly placed lumberjack flag.

eleazzaar MergedAnother way to address the problem is to turn on the tree-cutting overlay when you select or place a lumberjack flag.
Then you could at least see the range. -

WhiteRoo MergedThis is a minor thing, but I have noticed that there is no berry gathering range, but there is a wood cutting range, even though early game every trunk reachable needs to be cut anyways.
There is use for a tool that preserves trees, but I think the default behavior should be flipped. Wood cutting flags should cut all grown trees unless they are marked for preservation. -

Meia MergedHaving to select cutable tree zone each time is painfull. Sometime we are forgetting about it at a new district or tree planting zone.
Why not simply make all zone cutable by default and allow us to make a forbidden cutting zone instead. -

Castillo MergedHi, could it be possible to reverse the tree cutting selection, instead of selecting what trees we want to allow to be cut, we can select the trees we do not want to cut? Like the literal opposite but I personally think its more helpful than realizing you forgot to mark trees for cutting everytime (yes i know its my fault but this would make it easier) please?
This would also be nice to add a do not harvest, for more decorative purposes
or planting early but not harvesting until you have the available space, refinery, ... -

pinguinzz MergedIn place of choosing where to cut trees, make it "where to not cut trees"
I keep forgetting to select cut tree areas, and the workers do nothing, so i go and select everything close to not repeat it again
The way it Works now is backwards, usually i want every tree being cut, the exception is when i want to farm their product, then i make the area an exception -
