Hard Mode is too easy
I gave hard mode a try today and I survived my first drought without a single death. If you know this ins and outs of the game it's honestly not a challenge. Extending the time of the drought isn't really an option either. Eventually, you'll just reach a point where it becomes literally impossible to survive the early game due to the resources and time it takes.
You need some sort of addition that allows you to scale things easier. Something like random events like rimworld, for example. Something to add a little bit of variation to each playthrough so they don't remain samish.
As it stands: I'm on cycle 6 and while it is harder, it's also not that more challenging than normal mode. I really like the game, and I'd say I have mastered it, but there's very little interactivity between the game and the player. Any mistake is the players fault. The random time and occurrence of the drought is not enough.
Bring us some good old Ranny as an option. <3

Gin Fuyou Admin> cycle 6 and while it is harder
So you still long way in handicap period. Anyway I recommend doing a custom rules challenge, with shorter handicap.
But generally I agree with you - as long as you've learned what you need to do and figured how to dam the map, game quickly loses challenge. We need more mechanics (some optional ones probably) like floods, colds, fires, diseases and such. All of mentioned things are already suggested, but if you have more idea feel free to post. -

FaelykeI am, but I'm nearly done both two big dams that have enough water to easily last 30 days.

I chose this map because I wanted to build a giant dam, to be fair. I do know it would be harder on a less vertical map. Even so I noticed a lot of folks are suggesting one-off things. My advice would be the write them all down, and make them 'random events' that can trigger.
Think of the storytelling potential, you're in the middle of a drought and a plague hits your crops. Or lightning destroys a water tower. I mostly just wanted to suggest something from a game design perspective. (I've made games before, granted I'm not very good at it)
<3 Looking forward to seeing what comes up next.
Here's a video of Randy from rimworld, to give an idea of the sort of system you could add. Again though, no pressure. Just trying to help out. <3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD1mlWtPWK8 -

QuaxI disagree, but I think it's not a "right or wrong" issue but what the game should do. In my opinion it's mostly a city builder, not a surviving game. Whenever beavers die in my games, I had really problems. So, if one beaver die, many beaver are dying and all are heavy suffering for everything.
I played two hard games with 30-days-drought and managed them easily. But "easily" does not mean I not have to draw attaention to that period, as 30 days are more than enough to dissipate the standard water bassin (limited by flood gates to 3 blocks high. The iron teeth with there deep-water-pumps can dig deeper - of cause, with many big water tanks and a good stacking you will have no dissipating problems but needs even more improved infrastructure).
In the end the drought was always just slow down the game speed, after you managed to survive it.
But indeed: With the new foulwater you have harder issues and are forced to switch to the water tank solution.
