Late game need for tech using water weight? (Construction stress)
Currently you can survive very serious droughts with just wood and planks. All you need is to get a decently sized dam / reservoir up, and everything else is pretty simple. Using levees only logs are really needed. Perhaps some kind of simple stress modelling could be used to prevent players building big reservoirs only out of wood. So beyond a certain size, iron is needed. 7 Days to Die has a nice color system for showing how stressed a block is, calculated as distance from ground. Maybe water weight could be calculated somehow and a color overlay is used to check damn stress.

LootypantsThis would be so cool - especially if you could re-inforce with double walls, strusses and later upgrade dams with steel or stone on the exposed boxes.
