Children Survival Mode
I think if your entire adult colony dies, but you have a pack of children left there should be a chance at recovery if the player wants it. Under this scenario the children should be enabled to pick blueberries and pump water until enough adults exist to take over. Maybe these features toggle on when the adult count is less than 2.
Alternatively scratch this and modify the end game screen suggestion for 0 beavers left to be 0 adult beavers left.

SammieThe possibility that beaver kids could be given a chance to survive by berry bushes to 'save' the colony from extinction I think is great.
I started a fresh savegame with the new update after a long break and my colony died in the very first game. The berries were about to ripen and also the carrots had only 1-2 days left when all adult beavers starved to death.
I still had 4 children, who then stood in front of full berry bushes and starved in the end, which was very sad.
This her I would very much welcome such a survival chance by existing berries on the bush. Should of course no berries, in a certain time frame regrow, then there may also be a 'Game-Over'. But at least one would have created an 'option' for survival. -

SammieEdit:
The idea:
As soon as the last adult beaver dies, the game is automatically paused and a pop-up appears where the player has the choice between: 'End game' or 'Activate survival mode for children' (conditions for this are explained in the tool tip).
If 'Child survival mode' is selected, all berry bushes will be immediately ripened and all beaver children will receive a 'Survival' buff, indicated by a special icon above their heads. This buff, as mentioned by Seth, gives the children the ability to eat ripe berries and drink water from the pump or a water barrel or the river until they are adults.
The 'survival mode' buff ends as soon as there are 2 or 3 adult beavers in the colony again and thus the basic supply is restored.
This also makes it interesting again for the player to keep a small supply of berry bushes to provide for such an 'emergency' situation. -

SammieWhat just occurs to me ... if the little beavers are not supposed to deal with the complex mechanics of a water pump, small special 'emergency fountains' or 'emergency barrels' could be added to the starting buildings and built with a few logs.
Tool tip for the emergency fountain/emergency barrel:
Capacity: 20 buckets of water.
This emergency fountain/-barrel fills up completely once when the 'Hatchling Survival Buff' is activated. Only hatchlings can drink from it.
Change of pop-up text -> image:
With the buff 'Survival' the hatchlings have the possibility to eat ripe berries directly from the bushes to not starve and to drink water from the emergency-barrels /-fountains to not die of thirst.
