Game over when the last of the beavers dies
Game need a proper game over when our last beaver die miserable. I had an accident when all my beavers died in all of my districts. I have waited one full-day extra, but the game doesn't end.

Matt RossThe end game screen in the demo before the early access was a nice thing to screenshot and show a friend "look at all I accomplished before the demo ran out" then they could try to beat it. In the current build the game just... going on with no beavers left and no real ending feels pretty meh

Rin MergedSo all my beavers starved to death because they would only eat bread and would eat nothing else despite there being lots of other food to eat. Now the game is just kinda going through its cycles without a game over or bounce back to the main menu. I think if all your beavers died then thats game over am I right?

MikeFor the first faction, should end when only one is left. Unless you really want to see them wander around until they die somehow.
-

CJ MergedEveryone died of starvation. I was too late to start planting crops. I did not know how to share resources between town centres. The tutorial finishes too early and should have explained. Something should happen when everyone dies... I just have this empty ghost town game that continues without end.

WizardTripz MergedHow about telling me if I'm gonna lose, instead of having me sit there wondering if more beavers are going to show up. Why even put this out into the world? Is there an end goal? Is this sims? with beaver skins? Is there a multiplayer? Defend against floods or something of trade? WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS??? Please, I'm a sensitive person with a hair trigger to speak my mind FAST.. So, lets not have me blast how this game has no direction, goal, or description (tutorial is garbage). Like starcraft and warcraft have at least CRAFT down, this is a peaceful rip off? Please, address this. 24hr notice.

JosefineWould like a little more detailed tutorial. Like how to properly migrate and all that. And have the game stop when the last beaver dies, or have a feature where you can "buy" beavers every so often to keep you form losing all progress made and restart. Really chill game and I do like it, can't wait to see what else gets done with this! :D

iiPandq MergedI was trying a challenge map I just made and when all my beavers died the game continued playing, instead of giving me a end screen. Could it be that I was constructing a Breeding Pod and the game thought that the Beaver who was in the future going to grow up could sustain and repopulate by it's own? I suggest you revise breeding pods and add an if statement which states that if the breeding pod doesn't have enought nutrients or is under construction it shouldn't count as a breeding pod with nutrients to make a child grow and try to repopulate by it's own.

Pierrequiroule MergedEDIT: I think it was my bad as I played with couple of hotkeys and might have pressed 1-2-3. Only the comment on GameOver message still holds
I just payed for the first time and noticed two things:
- All my beavers died but had no message indicating me that the game was over. I think it would be a good thing to have.
- They died because of thirst. As I was still following the tutorial and reading the popups I could not adapt fast enough. Plus the game was set on High speed by default. It would be nice to have on low or medium -

RichardStretch goal: when you run out of resources and the end is nigh, the game slows down to 1x speed and locks your keyboard and mouse so you have to just watch in despair as your dreadful mismanagement and planning dooms a tiny civilisation. You monster.
Also, when this happens, occasionally a beaver should look directly at the camera and weep. -

mjevansRe: Alfredo
The tutorial (as of the October 8th 2021 version) and recommended level don't teach new users about blocking the river with dams which I found to be the only effective way of surviving longer floods. It does a decent job of slowly explaining the basic bootstrap script and helping a player understand what to focus on to become sustainable. Restarting again with the forester in mind and a path to it you can get there fast enough to have a colony that can face a flood or two and has food growing for long enough to sustain a population. Ideally also get a basic dam to hold water for most of even the longer drouts. -

And then you could restart the game from the end screen directly. -

Bluetigerninja MergedI just ran my first playthrough and the drought got me. All citizens died, but the game continued to run. Maybe have the game end if all citizens die. Cause there isn't any reason to continue. Maybe a notification that all have died, then have a "continue" and/or "end game" options. You know so if you wanted to look at what you did wrong, survey your builds, plan for the next run through, or just end it there.
And an option to turn off buildings in a list so as not to have to go to each and every building in an emergency.
Thats all I have from my first run through. Really liking the game so far. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the game. -

KatI feel like I wasted 2 hours and I'm glad I checked this forum... It would be great if new beavers rediscover your civilization after some time has passed so you don't lose all of your work! Also, a notification that no new beavers are coming would have been helpful, I kept the game running hoping that new beavers would appear.
Otherwise, fun game... but I don't want to play again if I know all of my hard work can disappear and I have to restart my structures! :( -

Gin Fuyou AdminKat, you know that you can save game and load it? Game has survival element, so it's intended gameplay to fail and come again better prepared. If you prefer just playing sandbox, please try easy difficulty or custom one. It's just that at the moment devs haven't added game over screen.

Tyler MergedIf all beavers die, consider adding a popup or something to prompt player to restart the same map or choose a different map.
Other possibilities could be built into a full-death scenario, such as restarting the population with a new set of beavers, etc. -

FluddyYou could do when the last beaver dies the game zooms in on it and you can see how he sinks to the ground. Then there stands: "You're colonie perished after xxx days" with the reason why e.g. "You're colonie died of thirst after xxx days" or something along the lines (maybe with sad and ominis music for 10 sec or so?). And then you can zoom out again but the map is frozen and more like in spectater mode. Now you can reload and try to avoid that or just start a new game. Maybe it's even impossible to reload an old save in Hardcore (you can only spectate from that moment on) to make it even more pressing to keep you're beavers in good shape.

ak MergedGame just keeps going when all your beavers die, game should recognise your defeat and make you feel like the fail beaver that you are...
Perhaps it could also end with a scoreboard of your longest games...
Also maybe some random weather events could be fun, like rain, thunderstorms or snow etc... with some kinda effects on your town... fun game but just getting between the drought cycles doesn't feel super deep. -

tibeaver MergedI have successfully killed everyone since I they preferred to work in fields rather than address the whole drinking water situation. I feel like two things should happen: This triggers a game over screen, since everyone is dead, and everyone should prioritize water/berries/carrots in that order. It seems really dumb they'll gladly do science, or sleep, or work the fields, when there's water pumps not doing anything. This is really easy to miss if you're not looking at the pumps - so a warning would be appreciated that there's no water production.

EmmaAll my adult beavers died in the drought. All my children beavers then died from dehydration even though the drought ended; no one was left to carry water.
It was very sad.
It would be cool to have an option to do something about this, other than let all the child beavers die. Straight game over when all the adults are dead works too. -

Jey Simpsoni MergedAll the beavers died... and there was no GAME OVER... there should have been, I was just sitting around for 5 extra minutes. All the adults died first... then the children... there was no water and they were too young to realize how to pump it themselves and died of thirst.

RayneConsidering that the demo version had a game over screen, I am a little surprised that it is not in the EA version.
However, as a map editor, I need the ability to continue playing after the beavers have been wiped out for test play.
Because there is still a possibility for beavers to be born from the developer console or the Iron Teeth breeding pods. -

CatraSo long as this doesnt trigger if you still have golems alive.
Right now i'm playing a post-beaverpocalypse world, after a terrible drought and some "malfunctions" with my reservoir, all the beavers died.
But then I realized, the golems were alive and well, I had enough science left to unlock what jobs I hadnt already, and had the Mine as a source of science (first playthrough, hadnt unlocked iron teeth)
So then I set about recovering. The golems are now entirely self sufficient, starting from ~40, the golems managed to restart their own production and grow their numbers, currently over 100+, and are slowly retaking the abandoned beaver districts, and even expanding. Its a whole new challenge because, while golems don't need to eat, drink, or sleep, they have a massive production chain and if you fall behind it will be impossible to recover, since you need to build new golems faster than the current ones wear out. From logs to metal to pine resin to gears, etc
This is excellent fun -

SatiahI had a gameplay where all my Iron Teeth died, however I had two breeding pods running. I fully expected to loose the game. I was pleasantly surprised that I could continue the game, and wait for new beavers to be born. It ended up being a very successfull gameplay, with great many happy beavers.
-

ToryPersonally I like it the way that it is. For one, the iron teeth make it complicated to ensure the game is in fact over, but also I think the lack of a scripted end to the game fits the feel of timberborn very well. It's an interesting and fabulous psychological experience to go from fussing about how your beavers are going to die and what can you possibly do about it to a slow realization that they're all already dead and the world doesn't care. Goes very well with the high-camera wind noises :-) In general I've always liked when games expect you to conclude on your own that the game is now in an unwinnable state and that you should either quit or reset. It's so much more mindless to just blindly try to win until the game makes you stop.

I WANT TO KNOW WHY, THANKS -

WaltGood comments about edge situations like golems/bots surviving and Iron Teeth still in breeding pods.
Alternatives:
"A family of beavers arrives, and decides to settle." Maybe 4 beavers.
"A black-furred beaver arrives. BIB, the Beaver In Black!" (A nod to RimWorld, and maybe Paladin? [An old US Western.]) -

Beaverboiii MergedApparently my beavers needed some water and food, While maintaining my strict working scheme and having lived past 4 droughts my beaver was too tired to pick up some berries and after a short sickbed all my beavers decided to stop breathing. XerXeSNo. Please don't. Bad Idea. I don't think everything should be written out. When all the beavers die, it becomes very clear that you have failed to manage or micro-manage properly. I think you can then just stare at the screen reflecting where it went wrong. Also, it makes sense according to the lore. Humans are gone and so are the beavers now. The world keeps moving. What would be cool is seeing our district's slowly breakdown. All the wood structures to decompose and metal structures to rust.
