Performance (not necessarily FPS) issues (Lag, game runs slow, low framerate)
I have been waiting for early access since I played the demo and I haven't been disappointed, congrats ! But the performances are just not there IMHO.
On my current save, the performances are awful. Though I don't care much for the FPS at that point, running the game at x3 speed is actually slower than x2, and sometimes even x2 start to slow down. Again, not talking about FPS here, just the general speed of the game.
As for playability (clicking on buttons, building new stuff, etc..), I can't do anything at x3 speed, x2 speed is barely playable, x1 is more or less ok, paused game is perfectly fine. It fells like everything is tied to FPS, since they also drop considerably as the game speed increases (not even sure I have 1 FPS at x3 speed).
FYI, my current save has about 600 beavers (it somewhat feels like not much considering the size of the map, but no idea there) and 5 districts. For my config, I have a hexacore, 32gb memory and a 1660 Super, if that can help.
Thanks !

Max MergedI have 750 beaver, but my AMD 3600 only 3 core can run 100% usage and only few FPS in 2K, I suggest for CPU usage optimization.

Gin Fuyou Admin> Again, not talking about FPS here, just the general speed of the game.
What is a general speed which is not FPS? Generally you either have low FPS or game have lags \ freezes that are not as much represented by average FPS.
For a start what is your actual FPS counter (there are FPS counter both in-game and in Steam settings), record a video of a problem maybe if you know how, check you CPU and GPU usages, also please clarify which hexacore CPU it is. For playing game any desktop one should be more than enough, but not sure about 600 beavers, it's really not that few and maybe challenging for mid-level hardware, let alone laptop one. -

SugzI'm talking of the in game time. Simply said, it sometimes take more time to go through a full in game day at x3 speed than x2.
And yes, FPS right now are a disaster, I'd say about 1-2 FPS at x3 speed. Interestingly, as soon as the work time is over, FPS are smooth even at x3 speed.
About my CPU, it's an Intel i7-5820K @ 3.30GHz (I'm on a desktop). -

Gin Fuyou Admin> I'm talking of the in game time.
"Game time" running slower with low FPS is just natural. So it's just a normal performance issue. We'll see if devs can improve it. -

Alejandro MergedI've noticed that the FPS is heavily impacted when you're really far into the game and have a lot of buildings and beavers. I've also noticed that if you have too many/too big wood cutting area markers (green squares), the FPS drops like crazy. I currently find myself with approximately 200 beavers, and my fps starts to drop when the beavers have the status circle on top of their heads (water/food). In the screenshot attached you can see the FPS marker on the bottom right at like 1FPS.
I'm running on a 6900XT, 32GB ram, and i7 10700K.
Here's the JSON file of my savegame. It's around 7MB in size.

ZakI had about 30 fps with 600 beavers on 3x speed until just recently I started getting massive frame drops even with 200 of them killed off to try to help the fps. In the middle of the day I get about 2 fps on 3x speed and an extremely choppy 20 fps at 1x speed. The instant the work cycle ends the game stabilizes and I get a smooth (mid thirties) framerate even on higher speeds.

R MI've got another tidbit to add to this. It seems related to rendering the sun. I've noticed the camera is the light source, and as soon as the sun goes down, FPS/ performance increases noticably. This only seems to happen once cities reach a certain size (mine begins "throttling" starting around 200 ppl). Once the sun "rises" things are fine for a couple "hours", then sometime around noon or so, big performance drops.
-
26 Sep, '21
R MAdded information: the performance drop is directly related to the actual work day. This was verified by changing the work time, and observing the performance return after units got off for the day. Seems to be an engine issue.

Cam SaulI have a similar issue... 500 beavers and the game has become unplayable on anything but 1x because it averages about 8 FPS on 2x and 3 FPS on 3x.
If I let a few hundred of my beavers die off the game becomes playable again... FPS drop is in proportion to beaver count it seems. So it seems like this is definitely a game update loop/CPU bound rather than GPU-bound -

Tore Angell Petersen MergedGetting further into the game my pc starts too stuggle with the game. If I play the game at 3x speed I'm down in the area around 5fps. A static screen on 1x speed I get 30fps. This is clearly getting worse the more I grow the town. I currently have 8 districts and 672 bevers. The absolute worst is when I'm marking trees for cutting. Here I think that showing ever spot on the entire map that is marked for cutting is abit poor for optimizations.
I have an older PC that run other games without this much problems.
My spec is:

Nefariianz MergedI found out that once you get to a certain size the game starts to lag. At around 300 bevers I started noticing a drop in fps and as that number climbs it continues to drop and even when paused I'm starting to notice some fps drops too.

hhaazzeeyy+1 to needing significant performance optimizations. Hit about 300 beaver population and performance tanked to 3-4 FPS at the end of the beaver work day on max speed. (On a core I7-9700K & RTX2080). Additional FYI, the framerate recovers when they all are asleep, and is fine right at the begining of the work day.

Semmy MergedI have a colony of about 800 beavers (and a pretty ok pc) and the game becomes unplayable at 3x speed. It feels like the game is loading all the beavers all the time because at night it gets a little better. I don't know if this is intentional or normal but I'd love to see this fixed

An MergedMy game keeps lagging after the new hotfix released on October 8, 2021 was installed. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
The lag happens on any graphics settings above the lowest setting. While the game is playable like this, it's not very good looking. Please fix this as soon as possible. -

JohnyDLI think it's all the pathfinding of the beavers... cause I have the same stuttery play when the beavers are working but not when the sun goes down. It might be that there are ways to streamline the algorythm a little... or simply hash common routes.
For example, there's no need to recompute the route between a given distribution post and a given drop off point which are a long distance apart unless the paths are updated. This is also true of home to work. Or a production building and storage(s). The distribution post and each building. Etc.. -

iMPeANIA MergedSo i've got a tons of beavers and cutting areas, this ofcourse kill my CPU. Whenever i want to add new area i'm struggling wiht 2 FPS. As long i do not have the tool selected it works fine. And ssecond the beavers. It depend on speed of the game. The struggle startet at 500 of them at 3x speed, 2x was fine, 800 makes the 3x unplayable (5fps) and 2x is doing fine at 24FPS, graphic settings wont change anything ist 100% CPU dependent.

Veronica MergedI'm having the same problem--ever since the game update my game is unplayably slow on all graphics settings and uses upward of 90% of my CPU. Even on low graphics setting my FPS falls to 7 and the game can't be played. I was able to play fine before installing the hotfix and am very sad that I can't play anymore.

lemonI've experienced this issue once so I'm now minimizing number of beavers.
Nonetheless I confirmed this with less than 100 beavers.
I think this started after installing roof every pass around facilities for the outlooks.
Roof buff on everywhere is also a key of this issue perhaps? -

Ryan MergedI'm having the same issues. With 5 or so districts and approximately 700 beavers, the game is starting to lag while on highest speed. If normal or x2 speed is selected, there are no issues with lag. Game would run fine with 300 or less beavers. My PC should probably be able to handle such a thing.

RyanI'm at 1453 beavers now, with multiple districts and I can no longer use x2 speed. My FPS drops to 3 or 4 fps during the day, slightly better at night. I can honestly no longer really play. I still have much of the map I want to cover to go as well. I will have to shelve this game for now until something is done, if possible.

Kai MergedThe population of my map has reached 1300 adults and has been unplayable for awhile now (started to get bad around 800) with the game set to pause framerate is fine at 50+ fps but as soon as you hit play, it can drop down to 5fps with 2x speed drops further to 1-2fps. (have not even tried 3x)

firesurferAt 750 beavers on an i7-6700k at 4.2 GHz with an AMD RX590 and 16GB Ram. Not playable at 3 or 2x speed most of the time. I play on Linux with Proton.
What is interessting is that neither CPU, RAM nor GPU are at their limits. I would guess that there is some part of the code which might be slow due to waiting on some multithread workload. -

Kenneth KellyThe lag spike seems to coincide with the end of the workday. I did several tests changing it to different parts of the day and the lag spike followed it. Oddly, it is not nearly as bad at the beginning of the workday. Perhaps the calculations moving from work to recreational time is a lot harder since at the start of the workday beavers are usually asleep.
-
05 Dec, '21
Kenneth KellyI recently had a game that slowed to a crawl after hitting around 300 beavers. I killed off most of the population and removed most buildings, but 3x speed was still 2-3 FPS. I reloaded a previous save of this game before the degradation, but I could not reproduce it. My guess is there was some strange edge case that created a persistent memory leak or something.

ShaneI have similar issues (just under 1,000 beavers and normal speed is barely usable). I find that my CPU is barely being hit (less than 30%). This game seems like it should be fairly friendly to parallelization but over half of my CPU isn't doing anything.
