Shadows just don't make sense. (Shadows rotate with camera)
Shadows. Simply speaking, Not very realistic. Shadows always point to the top right corner of the screen no matter what rotation your camera is at. I'm not saying this game has to be as realistic as possible, but the shadows just don't make sense.

Fang86This is still happening on release. It would be cool if the shadow followed the day cycle and moved throughout the day
-

PaulThe shadows rotate when you rotate the camera, given that the shadows are not baked in, it be nice to have the shaddows rotate with the time of day and not be bound to the camera position.
-

YhokoThe shadow direction is locked to the camera rotation. Other games (Anno) offer an option to toggle this behaviour.

MaKnoShadows are trurning with camera instead of staying static. Is the directional light somehow connexted to the camera?

RSer MergedMake shadows "move" depend on time of day. Now they're moving with camera rotation.

S MergedAs the title says, rotating the camera changes what direction shadows are cast in. This is particularly noticeable on maps like Diorama, with large terrain height differences, but can be seen with shadows cast by buildings as well.

SimonI actually really like this feature (or bug). At first it was a little weird, but I'd actually rather prefer that I can see what I'm doing than looking into a shadowed city at the foot of some cliff. The current angle still allows for the eye-candy shadows, but without ever getting in the way. I think it's perfect as is. More games should implement shadows like this IMHO.

Klepsic MergedNo matter which way I orientate the cameras, ALL in game shadows also rotate to constantly point to my upper-right portion of my screen. They do NOT maintain a static shadow as if there were an in-game light source.

timberborn_bug_report_001 MergedShadows seem to be projected relative to the camera position instead of following the sun. Not game breaking or anything, but can be a bit disorienting.
-

Chris Wong MergedIt appears that the world lighting follows the camera instead of being locked into one location. As you rotate your camera, the shadows will actively follow the camera, with the light source always being to the left of the camera. Unsure if this was intended.

carter Mergedits slightly strange that the shadows are always on the opposite side of the trees from the players perspective..
fixing this would pave the way to time of day shadow effects, which might be lovely if possible! -

GraphicHealer MergedWhen you rotate using the q and e keys, the shadows follow you as if the sun is always over your left shoulder. Should probably be fixed so the sun always shows from one direction, or follows a single path across the sky relative to the world.

SeeRudyWhy was this marked unlikely to happen? It certainly isn't a dealbreaker for me, is it a limitation of the engine somehow? (Also I didn't notice and now I'm sure it will drive me nuts :D)

Gin Fuyou Admin MergedNot a bug, it's just how it works and I'm not aware of plans to change it (still may happen one day)
-

Wanted MergedThere are night and day cycle. So there must be natural sun. But shadows change with camera angle instead of this sun. So its totally a minor graphical bug.
-
26 Dec, '21
Gin Fuyou Admin MergedIt's just look unnatural, when you pay attention. It's intended lighting behaviour and it doesn't affect game in any way. If devs will have time to make a global lighting rework, it may change, but it's not a priority.

Komira MergedMight be just me but it really bothers me that the shadows follow the camera around like we're the sun or something, I think it should move depending on the time on day, which would also probably mean a new direction mechanic? (Might already exist lol I haven't played for too long.) That's just my thought, the game is so calm and nice and I love seeing the beavers run around when the game is sped up but just that little fix and it will be so much nicer.

James MergedAs you turn the camera, the shadows on the ground move. Seems to me the sun is always positioned at a specific point behind the camera. Having the sun behave like this is strange to say the least. Having the shadows move accordingly to the time of day could create a lot more immersion (or at least just make the sun's position static.

-
15 Mar, '22
Gin Fuyou AdminEthan, that is not a bug, so there is no need to keep it updated. It works as intended, if you vote up - it might push devs to change intentions, but I don't think they are considering it right now.

RayneThanks to great work by the modder, a mod to rotate the sun has been released.

I am using it and it is extremely nice to use. I hope this gets merged officially, as long as they fix the nights being too dark. -
