Change high floodgate into controllable levee (stackable modular flood gate)
I would like to propose removing floodgate level 2 and 3. And change the system to allow arbitrary height of floodgate
My idea is, separate floodgate into top floodgate, which is the current level 1 floodgate. And it's below component, a controllable levee. With the research cost as level 3 floodgate. It would allow us to stack any number of it, and only function when we put floodgate on top, or else it will just being a normal levee
The floodgate will then adjust it's slider to the number of below gate block, and can open the gate to the bottom of reservoir with any depth

SkinkHeavenGood idea. Also let us build levees on top of such blocks so we can flow water from the bottom of a dam

michael Moynihan MergedHaving to build levies so I can have taller flood gates without being able to release the lower portions of water bites. either that or taller flood gates. perhaps a flood gate add block one that you could put flood gates on top of to extend the depth of them.

TimAgree with both of these suggestions in this thread:
- Floodgate will turn a stack of levees into a movable flood gate of any height
- Flood gate to open at the bottom of a dam to regulate flow raw
The two serve a similar purpose though, as they'd allow discharges for the full height of the reservoir behind the dam. The second implementation would be more beneficial as it allows for a constant flow rate throughout the discharge, while the first implementation means you either get diminishing flow (discharging too fast) or need to keep adjusting the floodgate height, while still getting flow rate fluctuations.
This would be especially useful for reservoirs that empty into a water wheel channel to keep power going during droughts. Irrigation is a secondary benefit. -

RyanEven just being allowed to build a levee on top of a dam or a platform so you could have a hole at the bottom of a 10 space tall dam and either just let a small amount out constantly or put a flood gate in front of it to block. This wouldn’t require a total redesign of the system, just changing the setting that says “build on dam/platform” from “No” to “yes” until some sort of floodgate that goes at the bottom can be built. The problem is now you are limited to a 3 tall dam that is useful to control flow down stream.

Seriously UnseriousThe problem with just using a normal dam piece is that the water flow's not controllable. The reservoir will just keep emptying until there's no water left. We need a type of flood gate that opens from the bottom but can be closes when you need to retain the water for that format to work.

Aaron MergedCurrently, the game has three floodgate options, corresponding to three different heights. However, this implementation has a couple side effects:
- If you want to raise the max height of a floodgate, you have to delete it and order the next tier. This can mess up your water flow while the gate isn't there.
- Water storage is mostly capped at 3 blocks of functional height, as you cant release >3 below your highest outlet.
To solve this, floodgates should have a more modular approach. They could be implemented as a block similar to the other water control structures; to avoid breaking the fluid system, only floodgates, non-blocking decorations, and paths can be built above floodgates, and stacked floodgates would be raised/lowered as a single entity. This would allow building arbitrarily tall floodgates. Also, they should be able to be set at much more precise values; half-block increments are very imprecise and can cause flooding if it releases from a high-surface-area stockpile. -

michael Moynihan Mergedsome way to make flood gates stackable/ taller, or just allow them to be put on platforms

neptix MergedObviously, valves and the like would be excellent for deep reservoirs, but stackable floodgates should work with the current water physics and be much easier to implement, as well as giving players more flexibility in their megaprojects.

Hester MergedInstead of having a 1,2,3 block tall floodgate, have a gate block and a surface block which will change the height of all the gate blocks below it. If the floodgate is taller than 3 blocks it will need power to operate, and the power cost should increase exponentially with each added gate block

Cal MergedRight now we have a floodgate system that has a set 1 - 2 - 3 option, but what i notice from looking at the design and how it functions with the gates besides it I was wondering if an option could be to make the 1 flood gate work in sync with full floodgate blocks so you have the Floodgate and the floodgate control block for example the 1 tier is the control that in itself is a lvl 1 floodgate as well but for higher tiers you have to build the full floodgate blocks.
This way we can have reliable big floodgates for mega projects without there needing to be a separate gate for every tier above 1. -

Greycethetic MergedThe floodgate. An incredibly useful tool in any beaver's arsenal, and a necessity in building drought-proof resevoirs. However, these resevoirs can only ever hold a maximum functional depth of three blocks of water, as building a higher will leave a layer on unobtainable, wasted layer of slowly evaporating water, taunting you with the choice of destroying parts of your precious resevoir to retrieve it.
But no longer! With the addition of Floodgate Extension Blocks, beavers will be able to create new, unprecedented marvels of engineering and water storage. When placed on it's own, it functions the same as a regular levee - when a floodgate is placed on top, this modular masterpiece will extend the downard range of the floodgate but an entire extra block! They even stack beneath themselves, so your next Mega Uber Super Awesome Giga Dam can really let loose it's full potential.
tl;dr: A stackable block that when placed under a floodgate extends its downward range by one. -

TomVThis is good idea, don't know why it is not yet implemented. Stackable floodgate that command all gates below as one entity would be great addition and remove some limits in game. This should have more upvotes.
