Zefnoly's stackable floodgate/bleedgate system - alternative bottom dam valve outlet
"It works by "hiding" a waterfall when opened.
But also limits the "flow" simulated through in a way similar to the watermills slow flow (but with a slider to let you control how much it slows water down)
It is stackable but only on itself. Watertight blocks cant be built on top. But can be built bellow
When closed. The entire stack will become as watertight as leeves (and has to as water cant flow bellow watertight blocks)
Effectively making this a stackable floodgate. Which can when opened, slowly release water in a hidden waterfall inside when opened
With a slider that decides how resistant to water it is
When fully opened. The X crossed gates inside will be drawn into a spinning mechanism retracting them fully all across it. Allowing full flow akin to a dam with a one block empty of levees
When partially opened (at a set resistance level) the doors extend more from the shaft in the middle. Allowing water through but with a big resistance slowing the flow down." (...) -Zefnoly.

Ralms MergedCurrently, on really tall Dams, there is a problem where 3 tall flood gates are not enough.
On top of this, the game doesn't let you build floodgates on top of platforms.
As such, if the Dam has for example 6 blocks high, it makes its really hard / almost impossible to have a usable form to retrieve the water on the lower levels.
Currently, it seems that unless we demolish blocks, it's not possible.
Would be great to have the equivalent to a valve, that could be placed in the middle of Levees.
I would even say an horizontal 1 x 2 block, where to one side you have the gate wheel (drawn in red) and the other would move sideways (drawn in blue). (Check example on picture). -

Gin Fuyou Admin MergedIf they don't allow stacking of anything but same block on them, it's shouldn't have issues with game mechanics. Would be a bit more confusing though

Ralms MergedThe idea was to allow other dam blocks to be built on top of this.
So you that way you could have a way for the water to get out in the bottom of the dam and control how much water gets out.
My example of the 1x2 block, was so the gate wheel (in red), would be facing the dry side of the Dam, like as a beaver would have to physically go there an change its value (how open it is).
The left block (in blue), my idea was that there would always be like a structure block with some sort of moving component in the middle.
Well, an alternative to all of this would be for the game to have pipes.
That way you would just a pipe connected to the Dam and a valve on the pipe. -

Quantum Mergedplease add this. even if this is just an expensive end game item. you had to unlock it would make end game much more manageable right now I have a 7 high main dam that covers half the map but no game structures to support such a thing. even something as simple as "being able to build levees on top of dam pieces" would accomplish what I need, this would act like a small pipe through the bottom of the dam wall. and have a limited flow rate

Lilly MergedI was wondering if there was a way to add a gate for your dam at the bottom. Most dams have water that comes out of the bottom of the dam, so regardless of how low the reservoir is, you can still let water out. That way if you have a deep reservoir, your beavers still have access to water if it falls below 3-4 blocks.

Maxi Barmetler MergedIn the current game, there are only dam gates that can be placed on top of a dam.
However, I would like to open a hole at the bottom of a dam, to provide a steady flow of water after a big reservoir.
The outlet can be opened from the bottom to the top, and the logic would work this way:
waterLevel_i := min(waterLevel[north], waterLevel[south], waterLevel[west], waterLevel[east], outlet_i.y + outlet_i.value)
with outlet_i.value being 0.0 when closed, and 1.0 when opened.
The actual waterLevel then depends on the fact that there can be multiple outlets next to each other, and that water can also flow over the top. Since water in this game is not really 3d, the water level has to be whatever the maximum value of the entire stack of /<terrain>+(<levee>|<outlet>)*<dam>?/ is. I know it's somewhat complex, but I'm sure you can do it and many of us would be very thankful.
I really like this game, keep it up! Also, I attached an animation of how I think the outlet should intui -

Gin Fuyou Admin MergedThat is cool animation, but apparently that implementation was tried and turned problematic. It also seem to have an issue with not allowing to stacking that piece among levees which would break current water system. So I'm merging it with this thread as alternative design.

ExplodingONC MergedIn real world the flow control (not talking about overflow protection) of a dam is done at the bottom of the dam (along with hydro power generation, marked as outlet in the image), which allows the dam to drain all its water reservoir to the bottom.
1
However in Timberborn, the floodgate can only be built at the top of the dam structure, which only allows at max draining 3 blocks of water, thus making all dams over 3 blocks high complete meaningless.
That's why I'm suggesting to allow us building the floodgate at the bottom of a dam structure, or just add a new flow controlling block that can be put at the bottom of a dam.
This suggestion would probably require quite some work on water physics, but it would add so much potential to the game, since hydraulic engineering is obvisiously one of the most important aspects of Timberborn. -

Tory MergedThe River Outlet would be a 3x1 tile consisting of a Levee tile with a short bit of pipe sticking out each end. It should have a slider with around 10 increments to open and close its gate, with the volume of water discharged being proportional to both the position of the gate and the depth of water above the wet side. By building a River Outlet into the bottom of a tall dam, you will be able to let out every last drop, not just three tiles worth as with floodgates. If the reservoir is very full however it might let out more water than you wished. Making it a 3x1 will slightly limit placement options for this otherwise too-powerful tile, and also make it much easier to click on to manipulate when it is built into a dam.

lohithbb MergedThe current implementation of floodgate is that the gap opens at the top and the solid floodgate slips into the void at the bottom. Magic. Amazing. Awesome. Love it.
Can we make a similarish implementation for one that opens at the bottom? So you pull the barrier up.
This does 2 things :
- fixes the size of the aperture which regulates that amount of water flowing through the flood gate at all times (and yes, it can empty it out)
- should, in theory, dampen the flow of water.
What I am asking for is called a "sluice gate" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sluice.
Could be interesting. Who knows. -

AOD+1 for sluice gates, this is very much needed to simplify irrigation, much like real life.

SpaciThis Suggestion is so underrated! But I think it is vital to continue increasing the games quality with regards to realistic dam building.
A few thoughts to add to the discussion:
- this should be a late game feature because:
A) you usually dont have the means/recources to build Dams higher than 4 blocks in the earlygame
B) this feature would make Floodgates mostly obsolete.
It could use Robots/infused Planks to operate/be build to make it extra lategame.
- This suggestion would be a great way to also satisfy the need for higher Floodgates, because you can stack unlimited levees on top of sluicegates.
like this one: https://timberborn.featureupvote.com/suggestions/217726/add-more-floodgate-heights-taller-higher-floodgates
-an rudementary implementation of this could be to allow levees to be build on top of Platforms. If you create a hole on the bottom of a dam this way you could set a floodgate in front of it and voila: you have build a Sluiceway. (Please see image) -

could we maybe change the name of this suggestion to something more general? This way it would become much more searchable and it would actually represent the contents it got by now.
Maybe something like:

This topic is here because this implementation is technically not possible (without a major overhaul) -

Gin Fuyou Admin@ Spaci,
Title is specific because there are several concepts of approaching it, one requiring completely overwriting water system and thus unlikely so far, one that looked like it could work but had issues on practice, and this one, that tries to use existing working mechanics.
But I've added more keywords to it so it should appear more frequently on search -

LW MergedCurrently the deepest useful reservoir is only as deep as the tallest floodgate, ie 3 blocks (3m). Making a deeper reservoir is not especially useful as you can't access water below 3m except by using pumps which require crazy amounts of power to get a good flow.
The solution would be a sluice gate that can be built in to the bottom of a levee, for example. You would need to be able to control the size of the opening in much the same way as you currently control flood gates. You could then build a much deeper reservoir and even use the outflow to drive water wheels for power generation.
Of course, filling the reservoir would depend on having an elevated water supply such as in the Helix Mountain map. -

David MergedWith the introduction of Badwater, I think it may be time to seriously consider making a release valve that can be placed in levees. If you want to gate it with the use of gears or metal. We need to be able to drain reservoirs from the bottom using 1 devices rather than making descending floodgates, water pumps, or mechanical fluid pumps. I don't think these would eliminate the need of flood gates but it is a essential part of dam construction not in the game.

WhiteRooAs far as I can see, the problem here is the implementation, but similar buildings are already in the game. I think codewise, a modified liquid pump would work.
-Remove its power requirement
-Move the dump side spawning point lower by a couple of blocks
With some extra code controlling when it will stop letting through water, it should work fine. -

BurritoFreedom33 MergedSince badtide water has been added and the post I saw about horizontal floodgates hasn't been reviewed since 2021; I would love to have horizontal floodgates to be considered once again. Using horizontal floodgates would allow channels to be made and "we" could control the flow of water "at will". Say badtide is coming. I'd be allowed to channel that badtide or any flow to my desired location and revert back to its' original path or vice versa.
