Better optimization for high beaver population 2024: low fps, game performance
Game received major optimizations with update 4, but it still can use only 2 threads and settlements with thousands of beavers are unlikely to have decent performance even on newest hardware.
Note that game is mostly stressful on CPU, if you lower graphic settings and it doesn't help - there is nothing strange in it. It's also normal if you see in system monitor that hardware is not fully utilized - you should see per-core breakdown and if game chokes on CPU - video card might be not loaded even to 50%
More performance optimizations should come during development, but there are no estimates on that. Please, stay tuned.

Gin Fuyou Admin Merged"30% of map builded" doesn't tell anything precisely. Just to note game doesn't intend to tell that maps supposed to be 100% covered in player structures (except tiny maps ofc), no PC is expected to handle that.
More optimizations should be in works. -

Adamerso MergedHello :( When I have more than 400 beavers game easily goes below 6FPS even... With no overuse of CPU or gpu, I don't see difference at all when playing 4k Ultra or 1366x768 - both sometimes works like a charm, and sometimes dropping to 4-6fps with no reason at all (as far as I see :( )
also - when paused works quite nice, when at fastest speed - it's unplayable :(
If it would help I can provide my savegame with 1371 healthy and happy beavers :)

Muresu Mergedthe idea is that the fps is very low, when the pc resources are used only 30%/40% on average.. I would really like to develop much more but it is very difficult with that fps.. I am sure that everyone has the same problem in late game ... I am waiting for the next updates with love .. Thank you very much for the work done and good luck in the future !!

Philip Mergedso i realise that i might have made my city too big, but its a little disappointing that with my brand new top end PC i cant run this smoother then 2 FPS to the point were FPM would be a better term, but still, the whole point of the game is to make you city as big and stable as possible right?
and yes i have the settings turned to low, though i am still gaming at 4K
id also like to add that there seems to be something not quite right with the bot script as they completely ignore biofuel supplies when they are under way to a job, in my case causing a massive number to be without fuel even though i have supply stations throughout the map for both fuel and catalyst (same seems to hold true for teh beavers concerning water and food).
this seems weird since when we as humans need food or car fuel we get it at the next opportunity.
maybe add a script that if they pass within 3 squares of a supply entrance and they are in need of supplies they first get the supplies. -

Rogaty MergedI am asking you to optimize the game and improve its performance because after the 33rd game cycle I have to set the game to the lowest settings. With R9 5950x and RTX 3090 I have 3 FPS in game cycle 33, which makes the game unplayable even at the lowest settings. I have to pause the game to rotate the camera and build because the game runs at 3 FPS and doing anything is almost impossible

With 800 Beavers no quickplay at 3 anymore possible,
With 1200 Beaver no Quickplay at 2 playing is possible,
With 1500 beavers i have 3 frames on slowest mode,... i cant play anymore.... i could cry....
its nearly total freeze....
But there is so much space for many more beavers.....
Help me
Make it happen! Fix that pls! My PC can handle much more beavers

MasterBeaver MergedOnce your colony goes past a few hundred beavers, performance drops massively. Sometimes the game stalls completely for 1-5 seconds (mostly because of autosave, but I've seen it other times as well). This causes misplacement of buildings or the camera suddenly turns to a weird angle. Also a lot of times my clicks on buildables don't seem to register, causing me to click it twice or more before I can place the building.
On the same system I'm building truly huge megabases in Factioro or Satisfactory, but Timberborn seems to make my computer grind to a halt. Doesn't make sense to me...
Hardware specs if you are interested:
Intel Core i9 11500F @2,5 Ghz
32GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070
Hopefully you can do some more optimizations before reaching 1.0. -

Marelenso MergedIt's a fantastic game but it has a major weakness: performance drops too much as the colony grows. When the game gets going, performance drops horribly, which is very discouraging and a wonderful game becomes tedious to play. It's a shame, I wish this negative aspect could be improved.

The HatExperiencing similar issues. playing on a large map with about 500 beavers now. Game is slowing down significantly while not using more than a third of my CPU, RAM or GPU
(intel 11th gen i7-11700k, 64GB, Nvidea RTX 3080 12gb).
At regular speed the game is still playable but when sped up it goes into 10-20 fps and sometimes even below that. -

FPS with an RTX 3060 TI graphics card is only 2, as demonstrated in the attached screenshot.
Additionally, during gameplay, the CPU utilization rate of a 12-core, 24-thread processor is below 30%, and the GPU utilization rate is only slightly above 30%. I have reason to suspect that the game is only utilizing a single CPU core. -

S.IGreat game but gets seriously laggy the further you go into the late game. I have a map with 3,500 beavers, it's now so laggy that you have to pause the game to make any changes. Frame rates in low single figures.

Scottit would be cool if you could make the game completely ignore all the beavers out of frame and just use estimates on how long it would take for them to go from one workplace to another. that way it could calculate how much resources are being produced and how mny things are being built/destroyed without rendering it all. (this would be something you can turn on and off)

Albert MergedI have noticed that game "chokes" on high/ultra with 3x time speed.
While I'm aware its dependent on my machine, but maybe some optimisation for 2/3x speed would help as I guess we do not need to see every, single frame of animation with that speedup.
I have also noticed that game chokes randomly, making it not playable even on low/mid settings 1x speed. I am forced to close game completely and re-open it again to return to expected fps. -

Eljas H. MergedAs my colony starts nearing the thousand mark, fps drops drastically. Now im sitting at +-700 beavers and my fps has dropped to 35 on 1x speed, but cpu and gpu usage sits around 40%. From my 12 CPU threads, 4 have usage nearing 100% while the 8 others sit around 50%.
Judging from that, the path finding / other beaver specific calculations are heavy, but not well distributed across the usable resources. I don't want to step on your toes, but seems like the beaver calculating code needs improved usage of the multiple threads. Also one idea if not already implemented, would be to cache the beaver paths per district and only calculate those again when new paths/building get added to it (of course excluding the builder and hauler beavers). -

lagyboy3000 MergedGame lags constantly, every 30 seconds or less for about 5 seconds. Placing path, buildings, marking things, turning camera, even doing nothing at all. its constant. cant keep playing. Autosave is turned off, still does this. I'm running a 3090, 64 gigs ram, etc. my pc specs are high, but don't have them on hand. Don't have time to toggle every setting, but the few I have tried haven't helped.

Ryarralk MergedI know it's not the optimal way to play the game (and wasn't intended to work this way at first), but the new transportation system allowed me to try long distance travel on big maps, which can make single district viable on large ones like thousands islands.
I'm currently in "almost end game" where I was able to control almost all parts of the water flow in the map. So my road network is quite huge.
Each time I place a road connected to the main network, I have a noticable FPS drop as the game calculates/add the road to the pathfinding (I guess?)
Maybe enhancing the road algorithm would help.

HarriI agree with what players have said so far. My PC is a couple years old but the game just doesnt seem to use everything it can get. There need to be significant performance improvements when having a high number of beavers and/or long paths.
In my opinion, being able to densely populate a map is a requirement for any city builder and in the game's current state this isn't really doable. -

I have ~150 beavers and playing on a 128x128 map and its chugging struggling to run.
My rig is a ryzen 5800x3D 32G ram video AMD 6700 not sure what can be improved but the map is small.
Im a developer myself and i know optimizations come last in the priority list but please we the community beg for a more decent late game game speed :D

좀 큰 마을로 키우면 화면이 멈춰 버립니다.
테스트를 인구수 1K이상으로 해두고 했으면 좋겠습니다.
1k가 넘어가면 움직이지도 않습니다. 1배속 2배속 3배속 전부 마찬가지 입니다.
Optimization is urgent when the population exceeds 1k.
If you raise it as a bigger village, the screen stops.
I hope the test will be done with a population of more than 1K.
When it's over 1k, it doesn't even move. It's the same for 1x, 2x, 3x.
