[Experimental] Poor performance on large maps
I'm experiencing very poor performance on large maps in the new experimental build, especially at high game speeds. At 3x speed on large maps (such as Plains) it's measured in seconds per frame, but slowing to 2x runs smoothly. On a smaller map (such as Diorama) there is no performance hit to going to 3x speed.
I suspect this may be related to the new water physics, because lowering the graphics settings (switching to low, running at a lower resolution) has zero impact to performance. Going back to the non-experimental build also runs at high frame rates. My main rig is running Linux w/ Proton 8, but I have experienced the same slowdown on a (much lower specced) Windows 10 laptop as well.

I'm experiencing a similar problem with less severity. I'm still getting a good 30-40 fps, but I usually get 80-90, and now that my population is reaching about 600, 300 beavers, 300 bots, the game is starting to get very laggy when I open build or cut menus, while task manager says the game is not using any significant more resources. I'm on the Lakes map, and I've got a single district, VERY spread out across the entire map, I have a large industry running, that is building not one, but two World Repopulators, so I can cover the majority of the settlement. Just in the last . . . 100 more bots and beavers, has the game started to lag noticeably and slow down significantly when I open menus, it also is starting to jump a little bit when I scroll across the map. I'm not entirely sure what the problem here is, but it seems to me like the game would benefit a little bit from some CPU/GPU tweaks to allow it to use a little bit more power when the game gets really big like this. -

Gin Fuyou Admin> I've got a single district, VERY spread out across the entire map,
That's the problem, your CPU is bottlenecked for current game performance most likely. -

Tara FAdding an update as of today's patch (July 23 2024) --
The first time I set speed to high in my current game (Lakes map, Folktails), going to speed 3 appeared to work as expected. When it transitioned to daytime without moving the camera, the speed slowed down to 1fps again. I set it back down to speed 2 and waited for night time to begin, and at night was able to set the speed back to 3. The 2nd time, it didn't slow down at daybreak. Since then, I've been able to have it work consistently at speed 3 when the camera is focused on the main settlement (closed & reopened game, no change). Going to a different part of the map (either while sped up or speeding up when I get there), it drops to 1fps. Coming back to the settlement without slowing does not resolve the framerate issue, but dropping the speed & then speeding up at the settlement returns to high fps.
I can share my save with devs if needed.
