Better way to add and manage workers/individual beavers
I'm hoping that something like this is already planned, but I'm having a lot of trouble with managing individual beavers. For example, if I want a beaver to move from one house to another or leave one job to go to another or if I want to set a beaver to a specific task, I have found it very difficult to do so.

JeffHow is this "unlikely to happen?" Having to manually toggle buildings on and off to get beavers to go to a specific job is very frustrating, especially when you have a lot of buildings. Ran into a food shortage and eventually a water shortage before I realized how the beavers work when I distracted with creating a power network and wasn't paying attention. Was baffled that none of the beavers went to the water mill after that worker died. If anything, water and food should be higher priorities for all. If a beaver is literally standing at a job site doing nothing, even waiting for work or to haul, they should always check if there is an active, but unmanned water pump. Farms don't need to be watched until something needs to be harvested or replanted... so even they could check for the water pump.
When I had 4 beavers after so many died the game became very easy to manage as I only needed to have up to 4 active at a time. But really, not being able to manually assign beavers is crazy. -

KrufarI experienced this after a drought, had half my population die. And wanted to assign workers to food production. But it seems you need to individually disable all other work places, to force them towards the food production one.
A way to reset all workers or something simular would be really great. -

szymeldI totally agree, after a drought water beaver died and rest follow him because no one want take his job and keep water flowing. Without management this game has no fun to play just look as stupid they are dying from thirst and no one get a water from river. Other thing if the drought are so harsh for them in a reality they will move to more friendly area. This game is trying to show that animals are stupid but they are not.

HenrikPerhaps a priority system like we have for building buildings that woulæd be great only for jobs
-

drew beckI think a good work prioritization system will work way better — and be more in the spirit of the game — then individual beaver management. By setting min/max values on created resources (per building? Per district?) and a more general “when idle take care of x priorities” system I think a lot of this can be worked out.

Finn MergedI think it would pretty useful if you could hold and drag, or at least have some pop up menu for assigning beavers, rather than having to shut down every building you don't want a beaver to work at

xtina MergedWhen buildings are deactivated subtract the total number of jobs available to fill by which buildings are deactivated. The total number of positions open / filled are correct but the buildings below are wrong; it's really hard to reallocate workers after a mega drought.

Kat MergedThis was a problem that I had with my beavers today. Famine wiped out about half of my beaver village. The population just grew faster than I anticipated and food supply could not keep up. While I was trying to get the mill and bakery set up, my only two farmers died of starvation. I had the lumbar jacks jobs taken away to try to get them to go after the farmer jobs but they all took on other jobs instead. Eventually got a couple of beavers who had just grown up to take the jobs and things got a lot better. I would ask that there would be a way to have an individual beaver quit their job and take on a job of your preference. I think that would help with situations like this one a lot.

Yokmp MergedSometimes i want to tell them what they should work. Like if I click on a Building a menue comes up which shows me the Workers. If i then click on one it opens up his Profile with a Button showing where he currently works. I thought i could like click it and some kind of scrolldown menu appears showing me the currently open workplaces so i could send him to a new one. But it is just a button which brings me back to the building in which he works(?).
I may be missing something but there seems to be no way to send a Beaver to a specific workplace.
This is annoying especially in the early phase where Beavers are a rare resource. -

SquigglypotamusI agree that individual beavers should be able to be re-tasked to a specific job. If your elder beaver dies, it would be nice to be able to put a fresh new young guy in there, to take their place. I suppose that we could always have a lot of unemployed beavers just waiting to fill the ranks, but that would cause problems. You see, the worker beavers would soon resent that the non-worker beavers were given a free ride and they'd want to be non-worker beavers, too.
Another solution would be to have a labor hall that staffs jobs, based on building priority. At the beginning of the day, all beavers assigned to the labor hall would check in and get their daily assignment. All those not filling new permanent job openings would be assigned jobs hauling and building. Just a thought. -

brelamonI agree with the priority setting idea. It seems like a logical extension to the current game mechanics, similar to setting priority on which new object to build or which designated plants to destroy. It would be nice to set priorities on which existing buildings should have workers assigned.

Kevin Bergstadt MergedI think it would be really nice and helpful to be able to "fire" a worker from a job when you need them elsewhere. I haven't played very long (around 8 hrs), but I did notice when trying to reduce the number of workers at a builder hut or hauling thing, they would just choose another open job at random. If they were to pick a job that I didn't need them to do, and that job only allowed one worker, I couldn't get them to switch jobs without destroying the building. Not sure if I just don't know what I'm doing(happens often lol), or if that's supposed to be like that. It would be really nice to have an "Unemploy" button at each building, and for the buildings with a lot of workers, just leave the workers unemployed when you reduce them, and have us pick where they go. Thank you! so far I love the game. P.S. I think when they become adults it's okay if they pick their job, but just let us move them around easier if we don't like what they pick.

CassL MergedIt would be convenient to be able to select individual beavers and assign them to specific jobs/lodges. For example when there are less beavers than jobs, we could select a specific beaver and assign it to the job we want. This may be similar to prioritizing jobs/buildings.

Seizan MergedBad Idea. I don't wanna do this, this is tedious. Especially if you have over 200 beavers or so.
I agree that it would be nice if beavers lived near their jobs. However, I think if anything then the game should try to optimize that itself and not force the player to do it.
You are also likely to have all houses close to each other. Only thing I can think of is an option for the housing range. so beavers in that house can only take a job from buildings in that range. Or the other way around; beavers from buildings in range can go to that house. So you have some control over it. I don't feel like it would be very helpful tho. -

ArkaladinI very much want this feature, when I first started playing I kept exploring the UI for a way to do this because I couldn't quite believe there wasn't already a way.
This serves two purposes, most importantly is the practical ability to manage the overall workforce as to which jobs are being done when there are not enough beavers for all jobs.
Secondly, this would allow much better immersion and connection with the lives of individual beavers - I like to build housing for beavers right next to their workplace and find it incredibly difficult to ensure the right beaver is living in the right house next to (or more commonly underneath) his/her work building. Having beavers just randomly doing any job just doesn't sit right with me (although I'm not suggesting going all dwarf fortress with professions and skills that needs a dedicated application to manage). -

Miles MergedI think that we should be able to have more control over individual bevers for egsample you choud tell a hungry bever to go get food rather than fineshing there task or you choud asign a task to a specific bever or tell a bever to go do a necessary task when the rest of the bevers are asleep. I believe that this will allow for more immersion in the game and allow for more control over your coleny.

Netherdan Merged@Seizan I'm thinking more of a manual override rather than a mandatory chore the player would have to do. Sure the beavers can keep their current behavior when not "assigned" to a building but it would be nice for us to lock them to a certain job/house so that the automatic behavior would take that into account when doing its thing.
Say I have a water pump with an assigned beaver to work there, when I pause it the beaver working there would take another job automatically but when I unpause it the same beaver would vacate their automatic job and return to their assigned one, then the vacant job can be taken automatically by any other unemployed beaver. This way I can keep the beaver working near their house and have them start working as soon as the day start without having to cross to the other side of the colony to do another thing entirely. Not saying this is how it should be implemented, maybe they could go do their assigned job only if they're unemployed -

DoctorDDub MergedAssigning beavers to jobs is kind of a pain. You have to make sure that literally everything else is either closed or full before allowing someone to move to that new job. A menu where we can see all beavers and their assigned jobs, and even select a beaver and tell them what job to go do would be wonderful.
Foundation (game) does a great job of this, as an example. Thanks! -

J Ann HartisI notice that lots of suggestions have been merged into suggestions, but what has happened? I'm a young 67 year old who is recovering from a brain tumour. I found that certain games help with my concentration. I see where all the above are coming from. It is very, very frustrating to have all your beavers die whether of thirst or and hunger. I know its still early days for the game but there are some really good suggestions. Are you able to tell us all what is going to happen?
