  I get lag spikes when it autosaves. About 3 secs. I imagine map size and perhaps more so beaver population and how much you've built all factors into this, along with PC hardware.

  Autosaves should not cause the game to pause or miss user actions. Why don't you just take an in-memory snapshot of the game state and write it to disk in small chunks during refresh latency?

  If I can't disable autosave can you get it to save smoothly without hitching? PC3600 Memory, Gen4 Rocket Plus SSD - shouldn't freeze :)

  Posted in 2021, and auto save has only gotten far worse since then. xD
  
  Yea, this really absolutely needs to be fixed. Seriously, I'm on an SSD, with a pretty powerful computer. The auto saves even on a fresh new map are heavy. Why not try and find a more efficient method?
  
  You could also improve auto saving by dumping useless information such as dead plants (With a suggestion of mine that'd be voided anyway), and allow the players to choose how often auto save happens or when. Like for example, if I only want it to auto save if I pause for longer than 5 seconds, but not more than once every 5 minutes.

  Great game, been playing it for maybe a year now. However like mentioned above the autosave is a problem. My laptop isn't a gaming laptop, so the lag is expected (and happens regularly, especially when playing at 3x speed - even playing at 1x speed can be problematic), but I don't expect to be having this many issues with an autosave feature, not fun and often unplayable for long periods.
  The autosave occurs every 5 minutes and (at least for me) the game freezes for 30-60 seconds each time and only once the autosave has finished, it then proceeds to freeze again for another 5-10 seconds, eventually returning to normal framerate (26/9 at best with x2 speed). The game also freezes if I click outside the game window (or in from outside) and does an autosave whenever this happens which makes the freeze time much longer.
  Disabling the autosave also makes no difference. The game continues to freeze every 5 minutes regardless of if autosave is on or off.

  Then it's clearly not a problem with autosave, have you checked that your CPU doesn't overheat?

  I've played on my gaming laptop which can handle most high-powered games, does it on there too. If it is my laptop causing these issues, then why does it still happen when I turn the autosave off?

  on my 2020 M1 Macbook pro 13" (8gb ram), game runs well at a nearly locked 60fps, but whenever autosave triggers it freezes the game for a few seconds, not sure if intended or not, cities skylines does this to me as well though

  2nd feedback with same issue, slow response if terain level are changed many levels. they wiil bot happen if i do not change terrain. there are 30++ large wind towers and 30++ water wheel when normal game are running. this issue is not animation loading.
