Ladders and Stairs
Maybe add ladders for buildings that won't take up a space in front of the homes. I'd like to place buildings and then add a second level without worrying about redoing the pathway to fit stairs. Maybe keep stairs for going onto other levels of the map?

AzdevActually ladders as a concept would be awesome although I'd like to see a limitation to them.
A simple one like, supplies can't be carried up or down ladders. -

pmaraSpiral staircases or corner stairs/turning stairs would be incredibly useful for efficient vertical construction. Now stairs limit multi level building quite much. I consider this feature one of the most pressing matters in future development to make the vertical building design more enjoyable.

FidgetA spiral stair would be really useful, something that turns 90 degrees, so you could make a 2x2 spiral staircase to reach higher elevations or just to turn a path 90 degrees without needing platforms.

Stormcaller3801A staircase that was also a two-story platform would also be a useful way to implement spiral staircases in a modular format. The staircase rises 1, the platform rises 2, beavers aren't bumping their heads on the platform above yet you still aren't cursed with infinite voids above a staircase.

Gin Fuyou AdminYou can already place a double platform above stairs

EphoraStackable stairs
I think we should be able to build stairs on top of one another. The stairs on top would connect to the bottom ones with pillars just like platforms.
The way it is now, you have to place the stairs in a different spot every time you go up a floor, which makes it hard to have tidy buildings. -

TrippenMy suggestion for a ladder is instead of going up one space it could go up 2 with a speed penalty. Maybe research options for taller and sturdier ladders that cost more (using metal for example). Maybe make it faction specific and the ironborn get elevators of sorts.

LydiaYes please!!!!! Spiral stairs and/or stairs with a corner built in would be marvelous - it's currently very hard to try to plan and build things vertically because it takes so much space to build all the necessary stairways, especially because they get in the way of doorways!

Björn Björkman BäckströmI agree, a stair that turns would make stair towers so much nicer to make. At the moment it's possible to make a stair going up an arbitrary height with a way to exit on every level by using a 3x3, 2 layer repeating build. With curved stairs, you'd be able to make it look nicer and if you want to exit every other level, a bit more compact.

Ncc1702The Forester has a ladder in it already and I can see one being modeled after it work well.
The ladder could function such that it is two tall by default but can be stacked and a full arrangement requires one space on the bottom with one space above it in a straight line so contrasted with stairs which need a 3x1 space to effectively move up one tile a ladder would be a 2x1 space with a seemingly infinite height in units if two. -

SpookyjonsonAgreed! I actually thought the beavers could climb up stacked house buildings without needing stair access when I first started playing lol. Ladders or a rope system would be really cool and much more cost efficient

EnginerdDEFINITELY corner stairs, they would eliminate 60% of footprint & material to bank up to the next level. Ladders should be very cheap and easy to place (even on a path adjoining a building) as the ladder block shouldn't actually occupy it's tile. For fair-play, as in real life, ladders should sacrifice travel speed (50% of stairs).

ArkoI'd find use of ladders or even scafold as temporary stuff to help building.
For example, I sometimes need to build some full platform and stairs structure to build in a deep canyon, it is a bit to have to destroy the whole afterwards, when some lighter and less expansive structure could make this. -

EdesRozsaLadders or corner stairs are really becoming a must the longer you play.
To build lodges on top of warehouses, and then rooftop terraces, the stair combinations actually take up more room than the actual buildings -- and that's crazy. But with ladders I agree with the limitation that resources should not go up ladders, just empty beavers.
To go up one level and turn 90 degrees currently requires a minimum of four squares. With cornered stairs, that would take only three. With corner stairs, resources can go up, but at a speed or strength reduction possibly, due to having to navigate a corner? -

jarquafelmuI would love to see ladders so that you can build from the top of a cliff down to the bottom. Currently, the only way to scale down a cliff is to get the bottom and then build a staircase going up

ThefirewardeLadders as a cheap, early low/no tech option, obviously with a major penalty to connectivity or carrying capacity or speed so that stairs are better if they're available and there's space, would do a ton to stop newer or careless players using up all the available resources and being completely stuck on a cleared out tier with nice trees totally inaccessible one z-level away. Likewise, there would be niche circumstances like city center apartment blocks where ladders would make sense.

FalconAtRather than a carrying issue, I think ladders could be constrained by entry and and exit, just like stairs and suspension bridges. You can only enter one way and exit the other. In this, the ladder would essentially be a double/triple stair.

TTJI am actually against ladders. They would need so little space that it would almost feel like cheating! However, cornered staircases would be a good compromise and would be really helpful.

TraktorfischI think stackable stairs and curve stairs combined are the better alternative. It's hard to carry goods on ladders, but stackable stairs in straight, and 90° left and right turn, would still allow lots of freedom with building. Maybe make them "expensive" by requiring metal or enhanced planks.

steve Mergedit is hard to build vertical structures sometimes because you have to make extra room for staircases. for instance: i cannot build a small house on top of another small house with a single block inset because it will not leave enough room for a staircase - so I have to inset the second layer of houses two blocks, causing the structure to take up a much larger footprint. A ladder that did not obstruct walking paths would help me build cooler more vertical structures.

Rachelle MergedI think you could do wooden ladders that can only go up three height units and reinforced-metal ones that can go a bit higher. Make it so beavers cannot haul up a ladder unless they are a hauler with the little backpacks. This would be great for establishing new districts.

eleazzaarI think a reasonable downside to ladders is that the beavers would move up and down more slowly, and they would have a greater reduction to work range than stairs.

BFI'd vote against ladders. Stair improvements, like corner stairs, would be terrific, and they deserve their own topic apart from ladders. Another idea would be diagonal stairs, which allow entry from more than one adjacent tile on the top and/or bottom. This might be depicted visually with broad curved steps, and it could be balanced by requiring metal (since planks wouldn't be sufficiently supported in a curved configuration).

Gene MergedThe ladder would look like a little ladder in a 1x1 platform. Possibly it could scale.
Importantly, it would still have a directionality at the top side, though not at the bottom.
For balance reasons, cheaper to build but beavers can't carry loads over through it. best for making dense housing blocks.

LI'd like ladders for early game alternatives. To balance them with alternatives I'd make the movement reduced by 50% on them.
I see a lot of people talking about spiral staircases... well you're only talking about this because of the current stair design.
The problem with the current stairs is the lack of path on on the sides, if that was a thing the basic stairs would work as a spiral staircase reducing the footprint to a 2x2... since this isn't it increases it to a 3x3 or 2x3 if you don't mind not reaching all floors. What you're asking is basically this, a smaller footprint to go up and their required platforms.
Ladder: +1
Staircase: -1
Change on current stairs: +1 -

Bryan WenzelGame 100% would benefit from stairs. They're amazing! But don't think movement speed should suffer... not every new idea or "improvement" item should REQUIRE negative-balancing....just make them cost a buttload of research points.

Fred Mergedi have made 18 gravity batteries and its so annoying the amount of times I've wasted materials or not had enough room to place things to vertically.
i suggest a 1x1 ladder made of 3 logs for 150 science to make vertical buildings. make it so that if you have a 3 x platform you got to make ladders going up and have to make three of them and a path entrance on it. have the ladders connect to the corner posts of the 1x1x3. that would make my life a lot easier if I wanna build to the sky <3 i love this game so much -

In order to connect your buildings, you can build pathways. This is quite easy when everything is on the same level.
However, once you want to start saving space, you start building vertically.
Whenever you want to create the platforms necessary it quickly becomes messy.
To solve this, me and most master builders like to shove the platforms in the middle of towers. This way you require less space for platforms, and you can't see them.
However, this limits your ability to face buildings outward.
Ideas:
One way is to drastically change pathing. Such as including ladders. I am not the biggest fan of this, I enjoy the challenge of creating the shortest distances with stairs/spirals.
Introduce streamlined platforms/stairs. I would love to see wallhung stairs/paths, allows non solid buildings to have pathways above them on the wall. Also less 'present'/'busy' looking platforms could be nice -
